My 1st gecko

Hi, this is my first gecko and my temp set up.
I have 2 hides, one hot hide and a cooler and humid hide.
I've made the hot hide with a simple box and cutted a piece so I can look inside the hide and see him.
I'm using a heater rock outside his "house" under the hot hide and a heat glo infra-red lamp.
I do cicles, when it's day I use the lamp and the rock at 28ºc, and at night I use only the rock at 18ºc.
The rock is small, so I can be sure that only one side of his "house" is at that temp.
To regulate that, I'm using prodac's magicontrol.
I hope you can give some advises about my first set ups.
Thanks

Claudio

and finally... here he is..

NO heat Rocks. Get rid of that thing. They cause Burns. You need an Under Tank Heater and some sort of thermostat to maintain the temp.

Cute gecko! Just couple of observations: 1) I've read so much about the risks of sand as a substrate on this forum that I, too, wouldn't recommend it "just in case." 2) Your heat rock might be okay if the surface temperature never gets too hot. IMO, an under tank heater would have the same risk if your gecko digs deep enough and sits directly on the glass. So, if you can't reduce the heat rock temperature with a dimmer-type thermostat, I'd also recommend removing it.

Hello again.. sorry I didn't explain my self very well, magiccontrol is the thermostat, it controls the rock and the heat lamp, I haven't bought heat cables already because this is not his definitive home, so I wasn't thinking about spending cash in that kind of UTH already, but if you say it's better, I'll take your advise. Thanks.
About sand..I don't use it, that thing I called humus (don't know what's called there..) because it mantains humidity in levels very easy to control, both ways, I think he's "thinking" about changing skin, because his mood changed, he hides more and eats less and today I heard him making some litles sounds when I aproached my hand near him.
I feel like a noob lost in "nowhere", here in portugal I have lot's of dificulties to reach good information, I think it's my fault too, but I'm trying hard to give him the best I can at this moment.

Oh and I bought another one..and offered to my girlfriend, a female.
Later I'll put on some photos, now I'm working and the internet over here isn't very good.

Thanks

Claudio

I looked closer at the pictures and I can see you are using paper towels and not sand. That is good. Pardon my mistake! Good luck! You are doing the right thing using this forum.

Also, your humid/moist hide should be the heated one. If it is on the cool side, it will just be cold and wet. Make all the other hides dry hides. Definitely get an under tank heater, other than that, everything looks nice :)

Ahhhhh :main_thumbsup: now I understand it, I tought the humid side should be cold too, ok, when I get home, I'll change that, hot/humid and cold/dry.
Thanks!

Hello!
Here I am again.
As I told.. here it i's, my girlfriend's gecko, this is the first pic I have of her when I arrived home with it.
She's very small, smaller than mine.
I heard someone telling me, that the female must be older than the male,to have sucess breeding, is it true?

Thanks to all.

Claudio
