I am so nervous! My roommate is bringing my baby to the vet today, she has been limping for a few weeks now, so we are having her checked out. Unfortunately I have to work so I can't be there with her.

I really hope it just turns out to be a sprain or something like that, but I doubt it. Chances are her knee cap slipped out of place (Or something like that). I guess it is common for this to happen with pure breeds.

I will let you all know what happens. In the meantime, here's a few pictures of Abbie, from a puppy until now, almost 1 year old (Aug 15 will be 1)

This is the day I got her, 10/6/05, it was the first time she wore a collar, it drove her nuts! I really miss the jingling sound of her little bell.

And of coarse it wouldn't be Christmas without her antlers....LOL (She hated them)

Give Abbie a box or a milk carton and she will play for hours, well, not quite hours, maybe a few minutes, but she is very happy for those few minutes!

She's always ready to pose for a quick photo shoot (and loves being on my bed):

And, here she is today, confirmation winner, first and second place, and Best Puppy!

I just spoke with the vet, Abbie needs both knees operated on. I was not expecting to have to have both knees done. Fortunately, the vet knows my roommate so he is giving me a discount. I will be having the first knee operated on the 15th of this month, that will cost me opprox $1300, and then I will need to do the second knee which will cost another $1100 or more.

Most of you know that my dog is my world, so there is no question that I will have both surgeries done. Unfortunately this means that I will need to sell some of my geckos. Not sure which ones yet, but keep an eye out, I will be posting a lot soon.

Sorry to hear about Abbie's knees, Jeanne! I hope all goes well with the surgeries. She's a beautiful dog, and I know what it's like to have your dog mean the world to you. She's lucky to have you looking out for her!

i swear, my dog has the same problem:( , except i have a labador, it is in the jeans, but is a lot more common in smaller dogs, my dog has a shalow grove where the knee cap should be resting, and if she bend her leg the wrong way it slups out, but by me, they want 2,000, a leg, i choose to give her special pain killers, because i am very causious, and it only happens about once every 6-10 weeks, and i just give her 1 pain killer when that happens, and i myself, have to put her nee cap back into place, this happen a littel bit more often during the winter because of ice, so i have so many bags so as soon as it snow and the ground turn to ice i get to melt it all away, also, she is 110 pound of musscel,so when it pops out see does not even tri to walk on it on til she has had the pain killer(people do not be con fused i do not give my dog pain killers on a daily basics, i only give'em to her when this piticular sinerio hapens)wow this to long to write

Jeanne- I am so sorry to read of Abbie's problems
I pray that the surgery goes well and that she is back to normal and pain free soon
George- I have an 11 y old black lab mix with one completely shot hip and due to his age- surgery is out of the question
He is on Duramaxx and I thank God for this medicine daily and for every additional day that Snoopy is here with me
This medicine was given on a daily basis (100mg) and is a chewable pill that has real beef and liver in it's ingredients
He can now skip a day if he is not having pain -(mostly due to the weather just as people have) and the pice of $4 per pill is a price that I gladly pay for what this drug has done for him
This drug-mostly use for pain after surgery has made the difference in him laying on the floor whining in pain and unable to stand to be able to move around normally and he even jumps up onto the bed-something that i would never of imagined him doing when the problem became so aggravated a yr and a half ago
Combined with other more natural supplements in his prescription dry dog food to help his joints-he is still here with us a year and a half after the vet told us that he would have to be euthanized because of the extreme pain that he was in and the vet thought that he would never be able to walk again

I love this dog with my whole heart (and my 2 other mutts) they are my children - and I certainly understand what you are going though Jeanne
You and your little girl are in my prayers
Please keep us updated on how she is doing

Sandy

I'm sorry to hear this, Jeanne! What is wrong with her knees? Is it inherent like hip dysplasia?

Thanks Marcia, trust me, I cried like a baby after I spoke witht he vet. Not that it is really anything to worry about, I guess the surgery is common. But, the thought of my bay going under the knife, being scared and in pain. Breaks my heart.

The doctor is pretty sure that her knee caps slid out of place, he is going to do X-rays and a blood test on the 15th to make sure. Like George said above, the vet agreed, it is very common in small dogs, and I think her being a pure bred doesn't help. I don't think it is inherent but I will find out when I bring her in.

Thank you Sandy.

That is a wonderful story about Snoopy. I am glad to hear he is living the good life now. Dogs really are "Mans" best friend. I couldn't see myself living without Abbie.

Give Snoopy a nice big treat and tell him it's from me!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I went to the vet and spoke with the doctor. It is a fairly simple operation. I have to do one leg at a time. And it will take about a month for each leg to heal. And, he said that I will have no problems breeding Abbie, which I am very happy about :)

The operation would normally cost about $2300 per leg, but, because of a GREAT friend, I only have to pay $1300 for the first leg and $1100 fir the second leg.

My friend Toni is doing a lot of work on the vets office (New tile floor, fixing the roof, etc.) and he told the vet that he will do all the work for free if the vet gives me a good price. A BIG Thank You to Toni! What a friend!

I told Abbie about all your well wishes, she was so happy that she couldn't get the grin off her face:

You know you are going to have to baby her and buy her lots of toys and her favorite junkfoods when you get her back from the vet right? At least that's what my mom did for me everytime I came out of the hospital after doing some of my "stupid human tricks". I still got some of my chew toys!

Hope Abby gets the "hitch in her git" back after the surgeries!
