My gecko seems lonely

I have a crested gecko. I don't know his exact age, but he is five and a half inches long. He has been seeming a bit lonely, and I am thinking that he might need a friend, but I am not sure if it is a good idea to go ahead and get another gecko.

His space is big, but not to big, and my leopard geckos seem to entertain eachother, do I am thinking about another crestie to keep him company. He always seems bored, even at night, but my leos never do.

If your gecko is a girl, you can house it with another female. If its a boy, he will have to stay by himself because unless they are raised together males get all huffy and fight. If you get him a girlfriend they will breed, and you will have to worry about what to do with the eggs and babies. No studies prove definitively what reptiles feel. if they have a mind to worry about being lonely or not, we know bordem can cause behavioral problems. The reason being is no one wants to put enough money an effort into the long possess of studying such a small animal. It was recently published that blue tongued skinks where able to recognize there owner, and know one human from another, that was after a 12 year study. If your worried about your geckos well being try to handle it on a regular basis. some geckos will even start to look forward to this and come to the top of he cage to greet you. weather that instinct or not doesn't really matter... :)

What people seem to forget is that reptiles have a more primitive level of thinking. Very few are communal and live together in groups. Yes our leos and some of our cresteds appear to enjoy the company of overs but remember this is our thought process we are pushing on them. In the wild most species only come together for breeding, then go their separate ways.

I will NEVER suggest two males together, even if raised together there is still a high chance for dominance when you least expect it. And you can still see this with females housed together. Not every gecko likes company. If you have a juvie it is best just to keep it on its own until you are 100% certain it is female, then it is a slow process of trying to introduce it to another female after the new females QT period. But even then when they seem as if they will get along you may still have fighting. I have most of my females separated from one another, only 4 of them have roommates, meaning I have 2 enclosures with 2 females in them. The first is a pair of girls who have been together for about 4 years now, and they still squabble with one another. The other pair bicker from time to time. But have had females that simply attack other females and as a result they need to be alone. As stated just because you have 2 girls does not mean they will always get along.

Honestly your gecko is fine alone. If it seems stressed for some reason it may be environmental and you may want to assess its living quarters. And if your gecko is bored, it is you thinking your gecko is bored when more then likely your gecko is just roaming around checking things out.

I don't know his gender, because he is a juvenile, but whether or not he is lonely, I am getting him a friend. By the way, you would think that I don't want all the eggs on my hands, but I prepared myself for gecko with an incubator months ago. I have full plans for selling the babies. I am getting another gecko on Monday, unless you can convince me otherwise.

Well by the end of the 3 month QT periode you should be able to sex the both of them, then you will know wether to mix them or not. Because, whether their male or female, or how lonley you think your animal is, this is CLEARLY not about him ;)

You just want to justify getting another animal.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Even though I breed geckos and i do have to introduce my males to my females, they are never together for more than a week at a time. And that is with a lot of checking up on them(at least 3 times a day or basically whenever I can)

You want them both to be the same size. If he's not an adult, you shouldn't put an adult female in there. If you put a young female with a young male, they will breed before she's ready, and you will probably get to buy another female down the road because he'll be lonely after she dies.

I understand.
When it comes to animals health and well being, I can't help but it let it get under my skin a bit and speak up for them, since they cannot.
