Okay so I just went and picked up my newest gecko. (I now have three...this really is a disease! :D ). I answered an ad on craigslist about a lady who wanted to downsize her reptile collection due to personal issues. So I helped her out by adopting one of her leopard geckos. I was told by her that it was female albino and it was between 3 to 5 months. I paid 20 dollars for "Nala" as I have named her. (Her original name was Ducky and I didnt like it.) Okayyy. Now that you know the background here are pictures of Nala and I have a few concerns.

My first concern is how small she is! I weighed her and she is only 12 grams. If her real age is what the lady told me than...she is underweight. I have 2 three month old geckos and they are around 30 grams!

Also, could you please confirm what kind of albino she is? I am leaning toward tremper albino maybe?

Also, I think she may be around the age the lady told me because she has a few toe issues. I assume these are from stuck shed. It is so sad...toe loss could have been prevented...but atleast nothing looks infected and she seems to be doing fine without them.

So what are you guys opinion? Was Nala a neglected gecko? Or is she just small for her age? I havent got her to eat yet. The lady said that she only likes crickets but I am planning on getting her on mealworms like I did my other geckos.

This lady was suppose be "expierenced" but Im not so sure...Atleast I have given Nala a good home now. She is currently in quarantine for at least a month or more. She will be by herself until I can get her weight up and insure her health.

She looks like a Bell to me and that could be the correct age. 30g at 3 months is on the bigger side of average, I'd say. So she's obviously underweight but not like she's never been fed. Maybe the lady really did care about her geckos but didn't have time to take proper care of them and that's why she was trying to find better homes for them. She doesn't look extremely neglected, like some we've seen on here, just a little thin. Her toes look healed so as long as she has a humid hide from now on hopefully it won't happen again. Just keep an eye on them. Good luck with her!

She is a very cute and adorable Bell Albino. Not really underweight much and looks like some stuck shed claimed some of her tips of her toes. Give her a humid hide and feed her and she will be good as new. Very nice find.

I would agree a bell albino. I don't think she was too abused, from the look of the picture. I have a moist hide in all of my cages, and sometimes, gecko still have stuck shed, even with the proper care. So missing toes, isn't saying that she was a bad keeper. I know if the gecko is having problems, I’ll just put a rough rock in there with them, to allow them to scarp what they need to get off, off. She also doesn’t look to underweight or anything, I would say, keep up the quarantine, and I think she will be fine.

Thanks so much for your replies! As soon as I got her I was like "I cant wait to get some opinions on her from the forum" lol. I have her on paper towels and I gave her a soak in lukewarm water. So bell abino? cool. Im glad to know that you guys think that she hasnt been super neglected. So 30 grams is overweight for 3 month old geckos? lol figures...seems like most of my pets are overweight. I just wanna make sure they are never hungry! Thanks again guys!

LOL I wouldn't say obese but it's not uncommon for Leos to not be 30g at 3 months.

She was a steal for $20 bucks. Glad you found her! What type eyes does she have? Reagular or snake?

From the picture, is looks like regular eyes. I don't think that bells can have snakes eye, when not mixed with another gene. Somebody correct me on this if I’m wrong, as I’m not 100% sure.

If you look at the tail you can see a few "lines" running down her tail, this means she is a bit dehydrated. I'll be someone did not have a good water dish in with her. Easy to fix! Nice looking gecko, she will take off with TLC.

I've had folks freak when they see Leopard toes and nails missing, this does not bother the gecko in1 the least as long as they heal properly, and they usually do all by themselves. Set up a moist hide for her and she won't have those issues anymore.

That's great to see your concern. :main_thumbsup:

She is a very gorgeous leo, and I agree with Mel and John. Definitely a nice gecko for $20, although I don't think it is considered an adoption if you pay money.

She is definitely in better hands now :main_thumbsup: Like you, most of our animals are big and fat as well :D

I just got her to eat 3 mealworms! :) Im so happy to see her eat. She isnt much of an attacker though lol She sorta just calmly eats them like she is taking a bite out of a sandwich or something. :D Pretty funny! I like her personality already! Thanks for all of your opinions! I truly value them!

Oh no...:( you guys when I checked on her this morning I found all three mealworms regurgitated on the tank floor. And to add to this I found a poop too that looked far from normal.

Im really glad I decided to quaritine. What should be next step? Slurry? Maybe the abnormal poop was due to stress of a new enviorment? :main_huh:

That's very possible. If this continues more than a few days then you need to get a fecal exam. Often I find that stressor of whatever kind can induce regurge or incomplete digestion resulting in food being pooped out that way. Just keep her quiet, no handling, and make sure her temps, water and hiding places are adequate.

Maybe because the previous owner only fed crickets?

No, that would not be a reason for incompletely digested poops. Crickets are actually easier to digest due to their lighter chitinous exoskeleton. Unless crickets were dumped in a big giant pile, overwhelming the gecko, it is not likely they could induce stress by just being a different kind of meal.
