my sick gecko

hey, just got back from the vet with my wee gecko. I thought he was suffering from sand impaction (I have since changed substrate for linoleum tiles, before anyone says) but it turns out he's just a runt, and unlikely will survive. I have been given critical care fluid and instructed to feed him baby food. He only weighs 2.5 grams! no word of a lie, his brother is the same age and is around 14/15 g. Any advice on the situation? I have them in seperate vivs now, to eradicate bullying. :(

Maybe this can help you out a bit. Marcia's slurry has worked miracles for many little leopards.

I'm sorry that your little one is sick, and I wish you the best of luck. All you can do for now is keep trying to get food/fluids into the little one, and hopefully it will make some progress. I'm also glad to hear you separated them and changed their substrate.

Did you get the little one tested for parasites?

i have another appointment next week, and have to take fecal samples from both my geckos to check for parasites. I have a critical care solution to try give him, as well as trying to feed him chicken babyfood with a syringe dropper. He just took a wee bit now, seemed ok. Just as we were leaving the vet, he took a wee poo, the first in about a week, so the vet took a sample of that.

thanks for your help and concern. She did say she doubts that he will ever grow up, but im hopeful that i can fatten him up and make him healthy.

I was just about to suggest that. My reptile vet uses it all the time. It works miracles. lol!

Would I be close to say he is near two months old?
(according to his brother's size and an average of 7 grams per month growth rate)
That sounds really, really small if it is. And interesting to me.
I have a couple little ones, one being a dwarf that
hatched 2008.
******Would there be a chance for a photo to show?
I would sure appreciate it. take care. HJ

Did you hatch Sam out, or buy him from
perhaps a Pet Shop?..
Now please don't be offended but..IMHO
.He looks too long to be only 2.5 grams.
Appears to me a problem there, not just a small gecko.
Would his 14 gram brother be about the same length?
I would certainly devote immediate and steady time to get
nourishment into him.
Good luck and hoping all the best for you both.
Take care. HJ

i bought him from a pet shop. his brother is substantially bigger. He was weighted at the vet, not by me. THe vet said that he is the runt, so much so that she doesnt think he'll make it. im aware there is something wrong, he's being tested for parasites, and has been wormed. im trying everythign i can, but on the other hand i dont wanna stress him out too much by fussing with him all the time. Ill keep with the baby food and critical care formula, and hopefully have some developments when i take him back to the vet next thursday.

thanks for your help and concern.

Your gecko is dangerously thin.

You definitely need to try whatever it takes to get food into him
or he won't live much longer :(

Hopefully we shall see a weight gain over the next week, when i take him back to see the vet. Any firther advice or info is more than welcome and greatly appreciated :)

Food and Water often

If you want him to survive
forget about stressing him at this point, he needs
as many feeding/water sessions as you can work in to your schedule.
He will not get much baby food each time you feed him.

probably only a runt because he has not been getting food and care from the pet shop.
Good luck, Stay with it, bring him back to health. Your time and
patience will feel rewarded.
...take care. HJ[/COLOR]

so how often should i give him the baby food and solution? Im giving him 0.2 ml from a dropper, but not sure how many times a day. literaly as much as i can? also the vet said the critical care should only be given once a day, but i suppose regular water would help aswell.
cheers for the advice

just a wee update, ive been feeding the baby food and critical care for the past couple of days.when i pick him up to feed, he really squirms, and opens his mouth wide, making it easier to feed.however he keeps pooing on me.dont mean to be too graphic, but it literally squirts out, and its mainly water.there is a gooey actual poo, but it comes out with a lot of water.any ideas?

I'm no vet, but sounds to me like that diarrhea type poop
is the result of the meds. :main_huh:

yeh, it just seems to be more than just runny poo.like (excuse the term) a fart noise and it literally splattered out, mainly water.i really dont think he's gona make it, I just gave him more baby food and it literally passed right thru him. Im at a loss as to what to do now, apart from keeping up the feeding sessions and hoping for the best.

GONNA MAKE IT.

Stop the Med..cut down on baby food...
Cut the head off a small meal worm. While he has mouth open..
..meal worm stuck in it. If he tosses it do another.
He pooing so you must replace with water or may try some gator aid.
Must keep him hydrated.+ Keep feeding him.
Anti-diarrhea caplet (humans). Crush a pill(2mg) to power. Divide into
8 parts........with a wet finger tip (from worm inners) pick
up one portion and get it on or in his mouth.
Keep up the process twice a day until he stops running.
Mostly go for getting worms in him now and worm inners licked.

He's gonna make it, he's gonna make it. YOU say it now and
keep giving him your time. He's gonna make it. The forum
is saying it for you.....take care. HJ

i've been in touch with the person i got him from, and we are going to see her tomorrow...however, i don't think he is going to make it til morning. We are currently in 2ft of snow, so didnt take him today, too cold.ive made him cosy as i can, and tried feeding three times today, hes really not taking me on though, it just passes straight thru...i dont know what to do. i am perfectly happy with the shop i got him from, she is a breeder herself, all the rest are healthy and thriving, and i have heard nothing but good things, i think i have just been unlucky. im gona continue with the treatment and see what happens, hopefully have some developments to post soon. thanks for all the concern and good wishes. keep your fingers crossed...id love to see the wee man pull thru..:main_thumbsup:
