I am going to start a new colony of these guys and want to get good quality bedding/gutload. What i am trying to avoid is getting something that is cheap and just crushed crackers and such

That is the gutload I use & it's been great. I also add carrots for moisture & more food.

The Meal Worm Mix

Layer Hen Crumbles, Carrots, Oranges, Orange peel, Calcium Carbonate.......Mist a couple times every few days. All phases put together. Much success for me since I switched to this method. A supple all the time.....Take care. / HJ

They will actually eat the carrots, too. I'm not sure if water crystals would work well, but I'm sure someone else knows. We only use those for our roaches.

We use Cody's ProGutload and I think it's great stuff. I just put potato slices in their container when I take them out of the fridge for moisture.

i just use oatmeal. ive been thinking of switching to organic whole wheat flour though, becuase i can easily sift it for worms.

anybody use flour?

Meal worm, eat this.

whole wheat flour.......yes tried it + about every other grain. I agree that wheat flour is good if you want to sift for worms.... ..but I just used regular, not organic.....I still recommend and believe the best is "laying hen crumbles"...From a farm store(Rural King) 40 lbs. @ about 10 bucks......Read the back of a bag and you will see why......its fortified to assist egg laying chickens......can't sift it though. But who cares if you gather them by the bucket....T.C.../HJ

I had problems with flour. It ended up killing all of my worms in the colony, they all got suffocated I'm pretty sure. I like to use oats or ground up dog food. I wish I could find chicken mash, or other animals food. But of course I have no farm stores within 3 hours from me.

mealworms.....flour??

Just my opinion, but flour did not kill them. Probably dehydrated due to a moisture source needed. oranges, orange skins, and carrots are what sold me...... other people use potatoes, apples, etc.
I've tried them ALL. The best even over the Oranges is Fresh Pineapple skins. The Big problem is you get Fruit Flies....(I call them gnats) Take care. / HJ
