Ahhh, sexing is hard! :main_huh: I have juveniles reaching 20 grams, and so I'm trying to determine sexes correctly. Here are two pics, the first I believe to be female and the second I believe to be male....am I right? Any advice on learning a technique???? thanks 'all!

1st is female and the second appears to be male, but I can't be sure with that lighting and angle

I agree with Paul and Chrissy.....first female, second male. It's hard when they are that young :) Sometimes it's easier to tell a male from a side view, but I'm not sure about that little.

How do you tell a male from a side view? Can you see the bulges very clearly?

Yes, bulges are usually pretty clear from a side view, or at least in my experience. I am fairly positive he has to be FULLY developed though.

I succesfully sexed all my hatchlings last season at a very young age with the help of a weak powered microscope. I maginfied everything 15 x i belive and could see the pores in males, and just the scales in the females... You know how the males have that pronounced v-shaped scale patern near the base of the tail... well, females will have the v-shape too, but it is way less pronounced. The way to tell witch is witch is to look at the v and, and then at a single cirular scale that makes up that v. Now in the center of that scale if there is a dot (this is a pore) then you havea male. If there is no dot in the center then it is a female. Tell me if its not clar enough, or if you have any questions...

I agree with the above, as well.

This sounds really great, in theory, Jake.....but...ummm......how on Earth did you get the little ones to sit still for that!?!? ;) I have a hard enough time getting them to sit still long enough to snap a pic or just have a quick little look-see at their 'private parts', most of them! :main_rolleyes: :main_laugh: You are very talented, my friend......or you have a secret trick that you need to be sharing! ;)
