I must have sucker on my head this week. I'm bottle feeding a 3 week old kitten and now I'll be taking in a 3 legged savannah monitor. It got it's leg ripped off by a tankmate during feeding time. Currently I have set up a 40 gallon breeder tank with 3 inches of aspen. I have a UTH and a piece of slate with a 150 watt ceramic heater set up. I have a 10.0 Repti-sun bulb. I have a wooden hide on the cool side and a medium crock for water. She was being fed hoppers and dog food. I thought they were supposed to eat bugs? I can pick up hoppers no problem but I don't like the idea of dog food. Can you help me out on a feeding schedule? She's about 6-8 inches long and I think she's supposed to be a year or so old. He thinks she might be a hypo. I'm supposed to be getting her Thursday night. The leg is fully healed but his wife, who originally wanted her, no longer wants her. She is affectionately known as Tripod. I'll post pics when I get her. Any advice is greatly needed. I will also need to know the appropiate size for her home when she is fully grown. Any good places, let me know. Thanks again

Here's a pic of the set up

I have the slate for the basking area on top of two large plastic hides. The ceramic heater is set on the same time for the lights. The UTH is located under the 2 hides. It is set for 90 degrees. I have the slate ramp wedged under the wooden hide so it can't move. Let me know if I need to make any adjustments.

Make sure you keep track of them temps in the hide to be sure that it's not too hot with the UTH and CHE since a 40G will hold in a lot of heat. A lot of times they like a warm area to bask and a cool area to hide under. You may not end up needing the UTH too much. Just play around with the temps until you get it right. Good luck with it!

Ditch the dog food. Also get ready for an 8x4x4 enclosure. Also aspen is bad for them. Dirt is the best. go to repticzone.com and read the caresheet under monitors for sav written by someone named kap10tiy or something like that. Also UTH are pointless for them to just use the bulb. also the uvb is unnecessary. any more questions just pm me.

Not yet, I'm getting her tonight. The aspen I'll use until I run out and then switch over to cypress mulch and bed a beast. I finally got the basking temps where they should be at- a cool 115 degrees. I'll be cutting out some pegboard tomorrow to help retain humidity in.
