Nervous about weather

I am in an area facing potential power outages due to ice storms and such. Being Alabama, I didn't exactly ever think I had to prepare for the whole "power out and frigid weather" contingency, but I have four beautiful and healthy ladies that this makes me worry about. All of the local stores are out of heaters (I work at a hardware store... I know firsthand.) I'm just trying to figure out a way to make sure they have a way to stay warm if I have to go without power for a few hours to a day or so. I've considered as a last choice contingency getting in the car with them in temporary small containers and spending the night in there with the heat on.

THree possible solutions:
--the least reasonable: identify friends somewhere who has power that you can take the geckos to. I say this is least reasonable because if it's an ice storm, you're not going to want to be out driving in it. On the other hand, I've used this technique with my incubator when we've had a local power outage that only affected a few blocks

--get one of those devices used for computers that you plug your heaters into and will run them off batteries for a few hours if the power goes out (sorry I don't have more info; maybe someone else knows exactly what I'm talking about)

--get 40 hour heat packs (the kind that you shake up to get them started, that people use when shipping reptiles in the cold weather) that you can use if the power goes out.

I'd say get some heat packs, there are 40 and 72 hours ones. I got a bunch of 72 hours ones stand by just in case.

I went with a standby supply of heat packs. I got enough to last through the next two days as well as to be a backup for a while. (Found a decent bulk price where I got them.)

What she is referencing is the UPS battery backups for computers. If something that has a extended battery life get ready to spend a few hundred dollars. We have 2 for our incubators and have yet a need for them but they are the just incase backups.

Ok I am also having the same concerns... where can I find heat packs? I work for Dollar General and we are sold out. Just need some other places I can go look and do you know roughly how much they will cost?

You can try camping and hunting supply outlets for heat packs. Sporting goods section sometimes has them.

You can get heat pack from a lot of online reptile supply store, they're under shipping supplies.

Get a big box of handwarmers from eBay if you still have power and Internet access, and your mail will be delivered :main_yes:

I also use the backup computer batteries, but mine runs only 8 hours without power and cost almost 200 bucks. It depends how much you plug in there how long you can run it in an emergency.

Best thing for longer power outages would be a generator, but you would need a back porch or something, since you can't run it in the house or in the garage, and it costs several hundred dollars.

Ok thanks! And yes Roger I went to my competitor lol they were out too. As I live in Tennessee and we been having snow storms so everyone here (im originally from NY and MI) are scared of an inch of snow and everything has been hard to find! I did not think of an outdoor store/section though thats a good idea.
