Its blue insulated foam board. We buy it at lowes and put plaster over it, then primer, then paint it. You cut what you would like outa the GIANT piece of blue board.

Haha!
That is such a great idea!

Yeah, prices would be cool to know.
I heard plasters breaks and cracks really easy. Is this true? Did you have any problems with plaster?

Thanks!

Going to rough estimate all the costs.

Big tub of plaster AKA joint compound 10-12 bucks (makes like 5-6 backgrounds)

Blue board GIANT sheet want to say its like 4 by 8 but i feel its bigger 14 bucks(can make about 4-5 backgrounds if cut properly)

Acrylic paint (we use acrylic because its none toxic and hardens to a rubber plastic) each tube of paint is like 5 bucks

Primer depends on size all different sizes and primer goes a LONG way (bought a small little can have made 4 back drops so far)

exact o knifes 3-7 (depends on knife coolness)

Think that is it.

As for the plaster breaking with the primer and acrylic over it, doesn't break unless you bang a corner hard or wedge it in your tank.

If you bang a corner and do break it grab a bit of acrylic and paint spot you hit and let it dry.

The girlfriend and I have thought about making these, and bring them to shows in the northeast. We have been getting such great responses, that if we can figure out a price that is affordable maybe we will start.

Good idea.
This one you made would be the "Dollhouse in the Canyon" backround.
Haha!

That's actually a really good idea for a sales pitch!

I was thinking about whether this could be used as a floor. I love my tile but my only concern would be the UTH heating up on the Styrofoam and setting off fumes from the plaster and paint.

Thing with a floor is you need to exact fit, and the top of most cages has a lip. So to get it to fit in you need to make it a little smaller. The space that the floor now has by the sides is a great cricket hiding place. I try my hardest when i make these things for simplicity, cleaning, and for no hiding food. :main_laugh:
