This pretty girl just arrived. I'm a bit irritated that I traded my really nice calling male and was sent a large juvenile in return :main_angry:, but time will fix that.

Very pretty...now I know why you wanted to switch from geckos to frogs:)
I think I still like the red eye tree frogs best though. I looked into poison dart frogs breifly before, and once I found out I couldnt have all the different colored morphs in the same enclosure, I gave up. I wanted a beautiful planted terrarium full of colorful eye candy:smile:

Beautiful...but I hope this deal doesn't end up the way I see it going...

Unfortunately I think it has gone that way. I posted her on a dart forum and two guys I trust agree that it looks like a 10-12 month old male rather than an 18 month old female.

Well THAT would certainly stink... what recourse do you have it if IS male and not female as your deal was for? Also what is a "Calling Male"? Pretty frogs tho.

None really, I could take it to the BOI but I doubt I will ever hear from the guy again. "Calling" is a general description for the noises male frogs make when they want to mate. Witnessing one calling is a 100% reliable indicator that it is a male, more useful than sexing by physical characteristics for many species.

I'm happy to report that the gentleman I traded with has sincerely apologized and will be returning my male next week. It turns out that he is new to darts and had never seen a healthy adult tinc until he opened the box I sent, his frogs came from a friend who raised them improperly and it seems to have stunted their growth.

Well I'm glad he was willing to work it out with you. How do you tell the difference?

Man Tony you're making me want some frogs. That is stunning looking.

They are too beautiful, why cant leo's be black and electric blue like that dart frog!

Tony- The difference between males and females. You said you figured the gender was wrong. Or am I missing something :S

Tara- Silly girl, I'm nothing like you! :p

Males have larger toepads and a smoother shape to the body, females have small toepads and a hunchback.

These pics show the difference pretty well:
