So we got a new garter snake yesterday from a kid on c-list. We don't have a good pic of him just yet. He's still settling into his cage. We were told the kid had him for a couple months, but never handled him at all. He looks just like the garters in the back yard so we think he might be wild caught..

Joe named him Emil, and we're pretty sure he's male but we've only tried to sex him visually. We won't pop or probe him ourselves and the sex really isn't important enough to us to take him to a vet to check.

He's 34 grams and maybe two and a half feet long. Anyone wanna have a guess at his age?

34 grams and 2 and a half feet long??? Sounds like it is a slender snake which either means it is a male as you suspect as females are much more robust, or it is not a good eater...

At that length, I would guess it to be atleast 2 years old, no younger... I suggest you get it on a rodent based diet as soon as you can... Feed it only pinkies to start... No furry mice... People will suggest gold fish but if the gold fish have any type of bacterial or fungal infection, it can easily kill your snake...

It is pretty easy to get garters on pinkies... The juices from Salmon will usually work good as a scenting material...

Years ago I had garters that would eat ground beef from a fork... Once you get them started, you cant stop em...

Alright, will do. We figured it was a male because it was so slender. We weren't going to do goldfish. We thought about guppies or minnows, though. What's your take on that? We'll get it started on pinkies as soon as we can. He's still a little afraid of us so I'm not sure how his feeding response to f/t mice would be.

His head is only about as thick/wide as a pen. It would be interesting to see him try and take a pinky
