Is there any herping in new jersey as I mostly see birds and mammals never anything. I know there are snakes and I could try herping those but I cannot find them. Anyone familiar with the Monmouth County region?

Northen NJ has some great places such as high point, pequannock watershed, stokes state forest, worthington state forest and surround areas. I have seen copperheads, eastern hognose, kings, corns, milk, timber rattlers, wood turtles, bog turtles and so on. I don't get down south much, so am unfamiliar with those areas.

Go down to the Pines... Lacey township has some GREAT herp spots... I have found everything from garters to rattlers there...

Northern NJ is also great like Paul said... I know a few den sites up north that are dangerous to even walk near at certain times of the year... In early spring there are literally hundreds of timbers coiled up taking the sun...

I am not famiar with open space down there , but try any nature concervancy or audubon property. Heavily traveled parks are not that good for herping. Mountain bike trails(if any) , usually have some good areas for snakes to sun themselves.

If you ever make it up to somerset county, I can give you some cool areas for spotted, wood and SHH a bog turtle maybe.
