Hey everyone!! Just got done setting up a new home for my new addition to the family!! I was out in the yard yesterday and stumbled upon a pretty little thing. Came right up to me and went into my hand. So i decided to make a home for it for now. I believe it is a northern red bellied snake!! View attachment 47119

He has a bright red bottom on him. It's beautiful. Tell me what you guys think!!

:( wild caught snakes are not good choices for pets. Some fail to eat, and are riddled with parasites. If I were you I would place him exactly where you found him.

Not too knowledgeable on geckos but I know a ton about snakes. While the parasites part is true (make sure you isolate it from any other snakes/reptiles you have), wild caught snakes can grow accustom to new lives pretty quickly. Wild caught snakes can live happy and long lives with their new owners.

Just make sure to do the proper research because snake care varies across breeds, but he's beautiful! Have fun with your new pet... :)

He/she is pretty but i agree with the people above. I have caught toads and frogs and even a skink in the wild before, and i gave them the best care i could, but they all ended up getting some diseases and they got really stressed out and one of them even died so I had to set them free. I always love playing with reptiles that i find in the wild but i always let them free because keeping them just really isnt the best idea. :)

May I also add its illegal.

Just depends on the state laws. Here in Missouri, a maximum of 5 species can be kept without any permit as long as it isn't endangered or on the list of animals that cannot be kept without a permit. I would check with your state laws on keeping native species.

"(1) Possession of Native Species. (A) A maximum of five (5) specimens of any native wildlife not listed in 3 CSR 10- 4.110(4) or 3 CSR 10-9.240, except endangered species, bats, dusty hog-nosed snake, Kirtland’s snake, western fox snake, and alligator snapping turtles, may be taken and possessed alive by a resident of Missouri without permit, but these animals shall not be bought or sold. Bones, skins, shells, and other parts of such wildlife may be possessed for personal use without permit, but these wildlife parts in any form shall not be bought or sold."

I would put it back where you found it. Whenever I would catch things from the wild they seemed not as active and did not eat a lot. Just my experiences! Beautiful snake by the way!:main_thumbsup:

Hmm that's a pretty relaxed bylaw. Here you can't have any indigenous species, for good reason. A lady got in trouble for feeding a Canadian goose and restricting its migratory patterns. "rolls eyes"
