Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I have a young leopard gecko right now. I'm not sure whether its a male or female but I named him Sampson just assuming he was a male. I keep him in a 20 gallon long and I was wondering if it would be ok to add a female in there to live with him/her. I think it would be neat to have 2 to keep each other company.

I wouldent see a problem as long as there REEALLY little if there jovie's there could be a posibility of fighting or premature mateing.

Also, I forgot to mention that I have an empty 55 gallon tank that I could set up if it would be better for 2 leos to live in.

Yeah I see no problum with you having 2 leos in the same cage but like Tommy said make sure that they are the same size and close to the same age other then that you should be okay I have 2 girls living in the same cage and they get along great. :)

I would make sure to get Sampson accurately sexed before finding him a companion. If you're just wanting to get one female, they can live in the 20 long, but be sure to keep an eye out so that if Sampson is a male, he isn't pressuring her too much. Also be prepared for eggs. If Sampson turns out to be female, then there isn't as much to worry about, although in some cases even two females won't get along. If you want to keep more than two in one cage, I'd upgrade to your 55.

Like others have already mentioned, if two geckos are living together they should be around the same size/age range. It's also important that if you have a male and a female living together that they are both over 50grams each, which is regarded as the safe breeding weight.

Also, be sure to quarantine any new geckos before introductions. :)

Are you looking to breed them??? I think I am bit confused by your posts....

If you are not sure of the gender of the juvie, I would would not put another in there until you are certain that it is indeed another female. Even if it is a female, care needs to be taken that they are similar age/size due to possible bullying. If it turns out to be a male, there is a chance of premature mating, not healthy... very stressful.

Also, geckos don't get lonely... they don't need company and thrive best when kept individually. However, if YOU want to have more than one gecko, many people house females together successfully. You just need to be sure they are similar in size/age and watch for stressed behavior.

Geckos aren't a pet that gets lonely and longs for companionship. I see so many people say they think there leo wants a friend, it's more like they want another leo and getting the one they have already a friend makes for a good reason.:D I personaly wouldn't recomend putting another gecko in with yours for several reasons. If you don't know the sex of yours then you could end up putting a male and female together which could result in breeding and breeding your geckos should be well planned. Even breeding pairs sometimes need to be seperated if the female gets stressed, thus you would need a complete extra set up to house the other gecko in. If you end up with two females, some times the females will fight or compete for food, thus you would need a complete extra set up to house the other gecko in. when getting a new leo they need to be quarantined, thus you would need a complete extra set up to house the other gecko in. since your going to have to get another set up you might as well just keep your gecko in it,IMO. I'm not saying they can't be housed together, but if your doing it to keep yours company it's not needed. If you do, please quarantine first and have the one you got, sexed.:main_thumbsup:

After reading all this, if you decide you do want another leo, be sure to quarantine the new one for at least a month before putting them in together.
