just picked up a male red-eye at the havre de grace reptile show, anybody have experience with these guys? right now he's in a 10 gal. with soaked paper towels some fake plants and a water bowl. i put in some small crickets just to see if he'd eat but he's probably gonna be getting adjusted for a while, he jumped up onto the glass and fell asleep right away.

cool, mine's pretty much set up the way it says except i need to add more plants and get a bigger water dish. i read somewhere that they do better in groups, but unfortunately i don't have the money for too many more and the next show isn't for another month anyway.

So you bought a red eyed tree frog without even knowing their care? Nice... They should have alot of real plants and bed-a-beast for the substance. :) That's pretty mucha ll I know. I'm into whites tree frogs, not red eyed tree froggies. =]

How big is you red eyed tree frog? 10 gallon is only good for a baby...

well i originally wanted to get a gargoyle gecko, but there weren't any really outstanding deals on them and i needed to have some money left over for tolls on my way home.
i got info from the vendors at the show, i was just seeing if anyone here had personal experience in case i have questions later on. every care guide i've seen on them says a 10 gallon is good for 2 or 3 adults, the males only get 2.5" long and females max out around 3". next time i'm able to make it to a show i may look for a cagemate for him if i can find a deal on one.
i used paper towel because it's easy to clean and i had it on hand and most of the space is filled with artificial plants now along with a bigger shallow water dish. also the word is substrate, not substance.;)

That is totally wrong. 10 gallon is way to small for 2 to 3 adults. A 30 gallon is OK for 2-3 adults. But bigger is always better. When your tree frog gets bigger, a 10 gallon will be way to small for him. Sorry, but it's the truth.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but... they need bed-a-beast for the substrate. What are you feeding your tree frog? Are you dusting his food?

Do you have any pics of him and his setup?

thanks for giving your opinions, but in all honesty i'll be trusting the info i get from caresheets compiled by people more experienced with this particular species.
these frogs only get to be about the size of your thumb, so they're nowhere near the size of a lot of other tree frogs.
i know bigger is always better, but i'm not looking to go out and spend a bunch of money a bigger tank when i have a perfectly good one at home already. the reason i bought him was to fill the tank i already had available.
maybe if something nicer falls into my lap for free i'll switch him over.

Alright.... :) Sounds good. Just please stick with one for now. I do know that a 10 gallon is to small for two adults though...

Do you have any pics of your setup and your froggie? I'd love to se him. :)

Males get to be about 2 1/2 inches as to where the females get to be 3 inches, sometimes a hair over. Lars' caresheet above is definitely accurate. I have wanted some of these for a while, but will more than likely go with the Whites instead, because I like the big frogs.

here's the "before" picture, i picked up some stuff today at work, so i'll have an after shot once the driftwood is baked and the cocofiber is in. you can see him in the back sleeping on the glass.

i added the driftwood log, cocofiber and sphagnum moss, a hygrometer and a little food/vitamin dish in the bottom. i doubt he'll eat anything out of the bowl, but there's a few small waxworms in there with reptivite and calcium now just in case. his water bowl is on the left side now and i put 3 of the 4 plants back in so he wouldn't have a good spot to just hang on the glass like before. he actually ate about 5 small crickets between saturday night and today which surprised me a bit since he was just moved into a new environment.

it stays between 75* and 80* in our apartment all the time, so it's right where it should be for him temperature-wise. the setup definitely looks better now, it was just a matter of getting the stuff for it today at work, i was definitely getting the hygrometer and the other stuff i just picked up because it was cheap and i had my employee discount.

he's snoozing away at the moment (as usual) but if he's moving around before i go to bed i'll try to get one.

he died today. not sure why, he was awake and active when i came home from work at around 3pm, so i thought that was a bit odd to begin with. he was acting kinda strange, seemed really uncoordinated so i picked him up to see what was wrong. he tensed up in my hand and stuck his legs straight out and didn't move after that even though i put him back in the tank and took him out again, the most he did was open his eyes for a few seconds. i put him back in while i went to work for a few hours tonight and he didn't move at all from that spot. when i came home his skin looked marbled and his eyes were open, but his heart wasn't beating anymore. i wish i knew what went wrong and if it was something i did or just all the stress and/or parasites if he was wild caught. i emailed one of the vendors from the show that bought frogs from the same guy to have him forward my email to the seller since i didn't have his contact info myself.

i'm more upset at myself than sad he died as bad as that sounds. i only had him for 3 days and it was sort of an impulse buy because they're cool looking. i feel so stupid because i didn't ask the seller much about them, i don't even know if he was captive bred or wild caught. that's what i get for making a spur of the moment decision like that. plus the tank i put him in is now officially cursed. everything i've had in it has died within a month except a box turtle and some hamsters when i was little.
