How long have you had your geckos? I think you should research more and get more experience with your geckos before trying to breed.

There's no set growth rate, so you can't really judge their age by their size. Also to sex your gecko, you best do a search on this forum or on google. There are many good resources that can help you sex your gecko, with pictures that really help.

Often when geckos are young, it's hard to sex them until they mature a bit. And I do agree with above, if you are new to leopard geckos and don't know the basics of sexing and such, please don't jump into breeding right away.

it varies from gecko to gecko. Do a search on this board and you should be able to find how to tell male from female. But I agree you need to do lots of research before you think of breeding.

If your pic is on your website, just post a URL to it here, that works! Or, you can upload them into photobucket.

If you have a transparent deli cup, put your geckos in there and take a clear photo from underneath (or hold them and take a clear pic from under their tail); then, we can tell you whether they are male or female. Males have V-shaped darker pores and two bulges under their tails; females don't.

You can start sexing hatchlings with a very strong flashlight, according to some people, because this will show you the veins (blood supply to the male's hemipenis) that females don't have. Or visually sex from the 3rd months onward. If yours is really 6th months old, sexing should be no problem. Maybe you can tell already if it has two big round bulges under its tail :main_yes:

Growth rates vary and most people on here will probably agree with me that you can't trust a single thing that most pet store employees say. Sexing them is very easy after several months (and you aren't in a rush anyway, right?). The pictures would be helpful but you will probably find that you can do this rather easily on your own once you have seen plenty of example images like these...

I know what you mean, I'm a dog person and a leo person, and thats basically the extent of my pet interests. They are extremely cool animals. I also understand the naming dilema, which is why I opt for more gender neutral names usually (yoshi, storm, gadget, bandit, etc.).

If you want to get into some deep reading I highly recommend this website...

I still use it as a reference to this day when I can't remember something, particularly the morph guide.

These are our geckos. These are my three little ones. Can you help me to determine their age and what kind of leos are they? Thanks for your help!

The first one is a very beautiful SHTCT (= Super Hypo Tangerine Carrot Tail). It's also a Baldy, meaning without any spots on the head. Hypo refers to having no or very few spots on the body, and yours is a Super Hypo, because there are no spots on the body. The Tangerine refers to the orange/yellowish body color, and the Carrot Tail means it's over 25% orange. Very nice! :main_yes:

The other two look like Normals, also called Wild Type, because this is what they look like in the rocky deserts of India and Pakistan where they come from. Sometimes, Mack Snows can look like Normals, but they tend to be less yellow. So not 100% sure, but 99%. Only way to find that out is breeding. If your babies are about 50% Snow, one of the parents was a Snow. If not, it was a Normal.

The first one looks like 1-2 years old, and the others between 4-7 months old. Definitely older than 2 1/2 months, judging from the size. All look nice fat and healthy! It's hard to judge age from the physical appearance, because well nourished geckos can look older than thinner ones, because they get bigger faster. So this is just an estimate based on the size of my own leos :D

The thing with your leos is, you don't know if and what they are het (heterozygous) for. That means even if their phenotype (what they look like) doesn't express a certain trait, for example albinism, they might still have the genotype (what you can't see). So if they're het Tremper and you breed them with another het or a real Tremper Albino, you have a chance to get Tremper Albinos. This will be your surprise when you finally get to breed them.

Breeding can start for females when they're over 9 months old and around 60grams heavy or over. Be careful, males can start breeding when they're 5 months old or so, but they shouldn't before they're 8 or 9. So until you're sure what gender they are judging from their underside, don't put them together, since yours are already getting close to breeding possibility, and it would be bad for females to start this young (it can stunt their growth or hurt them in other ways). Also, many geckos lose their nice color through breeding and become a little paler.Let me demonstrate this: I had an awesome 95% Carrot Tail female, Lucille, whose tail became a soft and washed-out orange after breeding. So just be aware that breeding won't make your breeders prettier, and can potentially harm them (females CAN die from egg binding and other complications; males can get a prolapse, etc.), but that's the risk every breeder incurs.

So enjoy them while they're young and have vibrant colors :main_thumbsup:

Sorry to jack, but if mine just has 1 spot in between his shoulder blades, does that make him just a hypo or would he be a super hypo?
