alright- now the totally stupid question... what's a hypo? ... from what i found on the leopard gecko wiki it just means not as spotted? where do they come from?
Yes, that's it exactly --not as spotted. Some people say 10 spots or less on the body. There's a range in spotting from the old fashioned normals which were heavily spotted, to somewhat less spotted (the "high yellows" meaning "a lot of yellow") to having just a few spots ( hypos) to no body spots. Since most spotting seems to be a line breeding issue, it's not unusual to get the whole range of spotting if you breed, say, a heavily spotted gecko to a much less spotted one.
