So I hatched a very odd baby today and was wondering if anyone else has had any weird "genetic" issues this year. So I bred my fw x rrs het typhoon male to a fw x rrs het typhoon female and hatched this...

I know thats not a good eye pic and yes I will get a better one once it is a bit more calm. But the eyes have the "enigma" look and have the burnt orange coloration. To me this screams 100% enigma...but it cant be. Mother came to me at 23g (10/10/2010) and was never bred....so it cant be retained sperm. Neither parent is enigma. I am 100% sure eggs were not mixed up (i mark eggs as they come out of the lay box, and this clutch was all on its own in the incubator...the only 2 eggs in it). Here are the parents. I was about 10-14 days early. However, the mom has been retaining her clutches longer than normal and the baby also hatched yolk absorbed and other than an eyelid deformity she appears to be a normal baby,.

Dad (he had a FULL banded tail prior to hypoing out and coloring up...just ruling out ways ANYONE can say the parents are Enigma)

Any ideas?
Interesting either way.

It doesn't really look Enigma to me. It looks more like Patternless Stripe RW with eye deformities. Maybe the eye issue is giving the eye the "Enigma Eye" look?

Possibly. Thats what we were thinking it was...as I told you before. I will try to get some better pics some other time though. I think it is just a premie with some enigma look to it...but my wife (who is pregnant) says im "stupid and dont know..." Maybe she just needs some more ice cream. We will see what the clutch mate is soon.

Is this mama gecko's first bebe? She may not have had enough vitamin A...I know that's one of the famous, "unresolved issues" in gecko breeding, but it happened to me last year. I've also seen that sometimes the last hatchlings of the year have problems, sometimes mom's running out of juice/vitamin calcium stores.

I think it looks like a patternless stripe RW, too; not enigma.

p.s. Don't ever say things like pregnant women need more ice cream. That's mean, and technically, it's your fault she's hormonal. I'm surprised she didn't thwack you one. lol

LOL she is the one who was telling me she needed/wanted more ice cream as I was responding on the forums. Ill give it up to her...she is doing amazing with all this heat were having and still being a trooper to go do things.

Back to geckos...This was her 2nd clutch to hatch and she is not deficient in anything. Obviously this is an assumption based on her appearance...if I wanted to I could do some chem panels at work on her but she is in good health and has no signs or symptoms of anything were I can justify trying to get enough blood for that...IC on a gecko is never fun. We will see whats up with the baby as it matures and see how the clutch mate comes out. Not our first premie...but hopefully the last.

I wasn't trying to make an assumption, and I haven't seen mom, and I have no idea what your supplement regimen is.

I had something similar happen when I foolishly let someone else house my geckos for a few months last year, they did not supplement enough and I had baby gecko eyes come out like this one and one that was practically eyeless. It was that dam's very first clutch ever. It was a painful horrible experience because both hatchlings later died, and one of them actually suffered a ruptured eye during a shed and was screaming in agony, and had to be put down...the one with the better eyes. The other (eyeless) one wouldn't take enough food and that ended badly as well.
The only variable I could account for was the lack of supplementation in the mother. It was most horrible because they were the only two perfect bold stripes I have ever produced, one Bell and one 66% het Bell. They were perfect except for the eyes...

Back to your gecko, all I can say is try to keep its eyes moisturized, and I hope it turns out better than mine did last year. And give mom some extra vitamins, just in case.
