Peppers tail has gotten worse. It went from just the tip to a half inch now of just black and dried up. I keep waiting for it to fall off. Ive put neosporin on it and nothings helping. I know its most likely from a bad shed, but I hate seeing it get worse and not better...

Would the vet be able to help in any way?

Update:

Her tail has got increasingly black, and her front left claws are turning pink.

Vet appt made for 10:20 tomorrow morning.
$97 for initial examination.

Gecko owners!
You should not own an animal if you cant take care of it. Things pop up and if you cant take them to a vet, then you shouldn't have it. Sorry, I had to say this because I see this all the time, my gecko is sick but I dont have money. Theres always ways to make money. Sorry rant done....

I hope it is not too serious for your gecko. You may have read about it before, my Lemsip had something similar happened a couple years ago. First it was just the tail tip, but then infection spreaded really fast; within a week, his whole tail is reddish and looked "deflated". He ended up having his whole tail amputated in order to save his life.

I hope your gecko will do fine, good luck!

+1 for the rant. I had severe money issues this year because of my health and surgeries, but when my male patty had a hemipenal prolapse, I sold some stuff on Craigslist... my geckos health and happiness means everything to me, and I will spare no expense...

Well, I agree with the rant, 100% But sometimes people just really cant unexpectedly afford it. I know for myself, I have an unexpected expense at school, and a lot of other bills that are piling up. However, I thankfully work for a vet so if any of my animals have an emergency, I can easily get it taken care of. If I didnt work there, I wouldnt have so many animals!

Anyways, I know exactly how you feel. I had a leo that had a superworm eat through the tail! It was the weirdest thing! The hole from the superworm chomp got infected and spread through the tail. The vet had me treat it with antibiotics topically and orally. She then finally dropped the tail and all was good, but what a horrible experience!
Hopefully everything works out! Let us know how it goes.

2. Dweorming ( done there)
3.metacam (antiinflammatory)
4. Baytril (antibiotic)
5.Nolvason (soak)

The vet was very impressed with my knowledge and care of her. =]

what was his diagnosis? be careful with that baytril, it can be VERY toxic

did he think it was some kind of burn? or bacterial infection?

Baytril should be determined by weight.

I always ask for the ml/kg on all meds by weight as it's very easy for an honest mistake to be made, especially when we are talking about such small animals. By getting the ml/kg I can double check the math before dosing

Baytril dosage is determined by weight, correct?

That is correct. Baytril, along with most other medications, is dosed at mg/kg. Baytril CAN be toxic when the dosage is incorrect, which happens mostly through simple human error: the owner misreads the label and gives .4 instead of .04, which can end up being a very toxic or fatal mistake. On rare occasions, the medication is actually labeled incorrectly, or the owner is told to give it more often than it's supposed to be given. This is when things get toxic and potentially fatal, like I said.

However, when given at the correct dosage for the proper amount of time (usually once a day for two weeks or so), it is a very effective broad spectrum antibiotic. We call it "the big guns".

yes, but it has different effects on different reptiles. like for instance it might be more harsh on a boa constrictor than say a tortoise (i do not know if this particular example is true).

I think you mean mg/kg.

Weight in lbs divided by 2.2 = weight in kg.

Weight in kg is multiplied by the dose and divided by the suspension = mL's to be given

But really, the vets and the vet technicians should only be doing that.

LOL, yes sorry, got ml on the brain today.

I agree the math should be done by the vet/vet techs, but I like to have the formula to provide one more fail safe.

A friend actually killed her bird a while back because the vet messed up the math on a baytril dose. She ended up giving the bird 10 times the proper dose every day until it died. It was only by referring to THE book on parrot medicine Clinical Avian Medicine (which has a handy chapter on doses) that we realised the mistake...

It took the vet forever to come out with the meds, they made SURE it was correct. I give her .02ml twice a day.

The vets not sure, She said either from a bad shed or a cut from something that turned into necrosis. She didnt understand why Pepper wouldnt open her eyes till I said she was albino and she needed to turn off the lights. Pepper still wanted to be difficult, when the vet turned away she would open her eyes but as soon as the vet turned back, she shut them again. When she gave Pepper back, she went underneath my shirt and refused to come back out. lol
