So last night around 1am I'm woken up by a loud boom sound & then all the power goes out in the house. I assume it was the transformer & it blew or something like that. We've already informed the power company & they're coming out today but I have no clue how long it's going to take to fix. I'm a little afraid for a the geckos, they haven't have any heat since the power went out & it's not like i could bring them under the blankets with me (I actually considered it but I had to go to work, which is where I am now). It's pretty chilly out right now, I live in Georgia, which isn't so bad but it's still pretty nippy today. I checked the cage temps before leaving.....68 degrees:(

Should I be afraid? i know Leos are pretty tolerant but I don't really know for how long, I might pick up some of those heat pack things you take camping on my way home but I want to gauge how worried I should really be. If it were any of the other animals I've had in the past (like Anacondas & pythons) I would be losing my mind, probly would have brought them to work with me, but I know Leos are a lot more tolerant of temp changes. So, any advice for a worried Leo owner?

I would personally put the heat packs in asap. I don't believe it goes below 70 where they're from, does it?

It's hard to say, Pakistan gets below freezing in the winters & i've read a million care sheets that all give a different low temperatures it seems (going down as far as 64 degress) so it's really hard to tell.

I'll most likely pick up some packs up on the way home unless the power is fixed by then, I can't do it right now I'm at work and don't get off till around 2:30pm.

I'm hoping the best for you.

Thanks, i appreciate it. I've decided if it's not fixed by the time i get home i'm going to pack them up & bring them to work to keep warm until the issue is corrected. I figure they can probly handle it for a little while but at that point i'll have to intervene and do something about it & my job won't kill me or anything since we're closing at 3pm today for a holiday party.

Yeah, I should I have gotten them, been meaning to just been so busy (i just moved to this place less than 2 wks ago) getting unpacked & dealing w/work and such. Thankfully it is at least starting to warm up a bit outside right now so hopefully that will help. I'm about to call the power company & see if they've gotten the ball rolling & if not, raise some hell. They really don't know who they'll be dealing with, If i lose any of them heads will roll & i can follow through w/it considering i work for a law firm lol.

they should be fine. if its only for today and it stays in the 60's, they shouldn't take it too hard. when the power goes back on just raise the temps gradually. If it gets really cold they may go into a deep sleep and possibly seem dead, but that is extreme.
Hoping for the best :)

That's what i figured, the good thing is I keep them inside a giant bookshelf type of deal (i think it's actually one of those things people keep dolls & crap like that, think Grandma's Hummel collection lol) and it has glass doors and such so it retains a higher temp than the room itself. Pic below of it empty...

I was thinking about this today right before I come on this thread. Most of the northeast as lost power and it's supposed to be like 8 degrees for the rest of the weekend. We're in the middle of a huge ice/snowstorm and I was worried. I have heat packs just in case for Puzzle, but I'm thinking about all the other poor geckos out here. The majority of NH, MA, and VT have lost power...what about all the geckos?!?! :(

We bought everyone of the heat packs that we could find when Walmart clearanced them in early summer. We used some when our electric was out for 3 days during Ike. They seemed to work really well. The big ones kept their hides at 90 for about 9 hours then they stayed at 80 for another 2 or 3 hours. I would switch them out after about 11 or 12 hours.

Glad to hear it came back on! Just in case for future occurances, and I certainly hope that you don't have to go through it again.. but even though 60 degrees isn't optimum, it's still not threatening for them. They will get cold and won't be very happy, but I'm pretty sure it needs to be down in the 40s for them to go into a cold coma.

Thanks, i'm so relieved. It's not that i even really thought anything would happen, it's just something that worries me b/c I like to be in control of the situation & there wasn't much I could do. I'm going to get some heat packs today for a just in case scenario anyway but i did manage to talk to the lady i'm renting the place from & she told me this was unusually rare, she said they almost never lose power & if so very briefly. It was purefly a freak thing it seems, the transformer just blew a fuse I guess (god that scared the crap out of me at 1 lol). I feel much better now & glad i'm only keeping Leos for the time being. If this had been 3 yrs ago I would have completely lost it lol.

YAAAAAAY!!! Power's back on! :) :)

My blood pressure can finally go back down....

Thats great news! :main_yes: you can sleep easy tonight :)

Better still get some heat packs though, next time may not be so
lucky.

BTW, I read somewhere that these heat packs have a "shelf life" and
are only good for about a year.

Is that true??

almost everywhere here is with out power, luckily i still have it but where i used to live is expected to be with out until maybe the 21st. many pet owners came in to my store freaking out with reptiles in cold comas not knowing what to do.

where would one find heat packs? i have been trying to find them myself but every where i go the sales people look at me like i'm on crack and give me icy/hot patches.

Its been a few years ago, but one winter we had a power out
because of ice storm.
I had 7 geckos at the time, no heat packs, and everything in
our house is electric.
I had to put all my geckos in little boxes and use my own body
heat to keep them warm.
So they were literally in bed with me.
Needless to say, I did not sleep that night or go to work the next day.

Later, I found a large cooler near a dumpster and salvaged it.
It works great for emergency temp control.
I put the leos in boxes and put them in the cooler with some heat
packs placed several inches away and only put the lid half way on.
It maintained a nice warm temp for as long as it takes for the power
to come back on.

Are you guys talking about those hand warmer things?

We're supposed to get ice starting Sunday night.
