Ok, shed in eye--pretty bad

Did the search function but couldn't find exactly what I need. Rescued two leos today and the female is really skinny, but she'll recover fine. I'm more worried about the male. He has stuck shed protruding from his eye. Won't open his eye, can't close it all the way. How can I get this out? I have no idea how long it's been there and I'm a little weirded out because when I tried swabbing the area with a q-tip, it looked like there was no eye in there at all. I'm assuming he just pulled it back into his head? But idk..

Any tips would be really helpful

It doesn't look bad, I guess, compared to some others I've seen. But he can't open/close his eye. You can see the little piece of skin sticking out. As far as I can tell that's actually stuck to the eye, not the lid.

I'm trying. He can open his eyes now but the other one has shed in there as well. There's also a film over it...I'm thinking eye infection. These guys'll need to see a vet Monday

Maybe you could find a tube of sterile eye lubrication & use a little bit of that with the moist cotton applicator. It looks like there's still an eye there.

I just watched him walk...and..omg I've never seen anything like it. He's stumbling all over the place, dragging all of his legs, walking on the tops of his feet, then the sides, then his elbows...just dragging himself everywhere. Is this a lack of strength from not eating, MBD, or what? He looks normal when he's not moving so I assumed it wasn't MBD before but now idk..

I wouldn't be surprised if it were a combination of starvation and mbd.
Was the owner supplementing at all?
If not then I doubt what small amount of food they were getting was providing enough vits etc

The setup was bare bones. Not even two hides in the tank. No heat whatsoever (he told me the bulb broke a week ago). The log reeked of feces. Substrate was sand. He was feeding crickets once a week. I highly doubt they were supplemented.

Oh lord!

Yup probably MBD, parasites and starvation are the cause :(

I would bet they will seek out the UTH!

My little rescue found his 30 minutes ago and is stuck to it!

I wonder how the female got away the way she did. She's active, walking normal, no stuck shed..super skinny, but other than that seems just fine. I know she'll recover nicely. How'd she get so lucky?

Could be breeding.
The male could have been pre disposed to it genetically, or the way he was raised, or maybe he had a harder time at the pet store before they bought him

They got them second hand...traded a parrot for the pair. The man I bought them from said his wife used to breed them. Judging by their condition, I'm betting she didn't know anything about them either.

These guys have been passed around so many times...it makes me sad to think about it. I hope that they'll both recover and I'll be able to give them the care they deserve

Rachael has done a fabulous job keeping everybody updated on how she has been battling this same problem. Take a look at this thread. It is really long, but you may find some helpful info, or at least somebody who understands what you are going through.

Thanks, the link helped.

I decided to give him a soak before bed. Probably won't help the eye situation any, but since he can't see I'm not sure he's been getting anything to drink. I'm half-hoping tomorrow will bring a miracle, but the limb dragging is telling me otherwise.

I successfully got the shed out of one eye! Completely out! I can see one beautiful, perfect pink eye now. He's still got it closed, but it doesnt look liek theres an infection or anything and I'm confident that he at least will be able to see out of one eye.

I dont want to bother him anymore right now, but I'll put him in a sauna again tonight and see if I can get the other eye clear too. Such a relief to know that it wont be stuck like that forever

Congrats! I hope that one eye starts getting better. It sounds like you have a ways to go, but each little victory counts for something.
