im confused, because here in ohio...waxworms are small yellow (maggot looking) worms that are the larva of a wax moth...and they dont have mandibles or any moving mouth parts for that matter. are there other "wax worms" that are like meal worms? or is this just mis-identification? and to the op, i am very sorry for your loss, i hope your son deals with this okay...i have small children and they dont always understand what death really is...last year we lost our six year old dog....and four year olds dont really understand what is happening.

I always cut off heads!

I recently started adding mealworms to by gecko's diet and I was concerned about this very sort of thing. My vet (who is a reptile specialist and used to breed leos) tells me that he has never seen a case of this happening with mealworms (I didn't ask about superworms). Nevertheless, I still *always* cut the heads off of my mealies. It's a bit more time-consuming than just dumping them in the tank...but my peace of mind knowing Jake is safe is well-worth the effort.

In sum: I always cut the heads off my mealies--just to be sure. Call me paranoid if you will. :)
