Some states do in fact require you to have a permit/license definitely to sell some or any exotic animals, some states you need them to even own them.

I'm not sure if Leopard Geckos is on the list for NJ, I don't think I've seen or heard anything about Leopard Geckos on any list. Then again, I mostly follow the snake regulations, I do know Monitors fall under some regulations in certain states. You may want to check with your state and maybe even your county wildlife commission/conservation.

I knew NY and NJ were strict, didn't think they were that strict! Next question is, what does it take to obtain the proper permit?

I would assume it would be different for someone wanting a Leopard Gecko Vs someone wanting a 15ft Burmese Python or an Alligator...:main_huh: .

Here in FL it's basically about Burms, Retics, Anacondas, Rock Pythons and Monitors.

Pretty silly that you need a permit for leopard geckos yet none for tokays. In South Florida we have colonies of tokays naturalized, I doubt leopards would be able to do that, especiially in NJ.

In Indiana you only need permits to have venimous reptiles and I am not even sure how much that is really enforced. I couldn't live in NJ. Do you have to have a permit per gecko? That could get really expensive if you did.

Well the petsmart work said that the permit will expire in a year that if i buy another one within a year i don't have to buy the permit. The permit here was only 10 dollars USA

Yes, the thieving state of NJ wants money from selling permits for every non mammal pet you buy.

nope, NJ is kinda stupid with the permits. I just filled out the temporary one a couple years ago when I got my dwarf frogs. They never came to get me for it. If you want to be safe you can do the permit but you really don't need to. I've had a ton of the things on that list and I've never been nailed for needing a permit. No one really comes after you. It's just a scam.

My only experience in New Jersey was for a wedding. I did think it was rather strange that you can't take a left at intersections and you couldn't pump your own gas. I figured that wasn't the state for me at that time....
