My boyfriend told me something funny today. He said the state saying in NJ is "Welcome to New Jersey...now go home..." It just made me laugh because it's true. The only good thing about this state is the vegetables.

NJ certainly does have some odd laws when it comes to exotics.... Practically everything requires a permit as far as reptiles go.........except for a really odd short list of a few species (do NOT go by the list of animals needing permits b/c it is FAR from all inclusive....you need to look at the exempt list to see what does NOT need permits....if its not on there, you need a permit). You need a permit for leopard geckos.....but not for tokay geckos.... To be fair though it is only a $10 a year permit and its one $10 permit for any number of animals/species you have. Although it is also illegal to sell turtles of any kind/size in Jersey....but not illegal to own them. There's a $100 permit to sell any animals.

you have to have a permit for sheep and hamsters
exotic sheep breeds and dwarf hamsters. Still wierd....but you don't need a permit for syrian hamsters

New Jersey is not THAT bad a state......South, south Jersey I've never really been to.....but if you exclude Camden, Trenton, and the Newark area the state is largely farms and forests. My parents' house is on a cul-de-sac with a 2 acre wooded lot with a stream at the bottom of the hill....there is no one behind the house and off to the side down the hill is a horse farm. BTW....Jersey grows the BEST sweet corn. (and I have had fresh grown farm stand sweet corn in numerous states....) We have abundant wildlife, I don't think I'd count the deer as wildlife...they're more of highway/neighborhood pets........ but there are bear, coyote, turkey, all the typical small mammals, lots of reptiles and amphibians.... You just have to avoid the crap-holes.......which most people never do.

I agree. We have the best corn. Most vegetables from here are awesome. We're called the garden state for a reason.

Amy.....please

Amy, I just to had look to see where you were from and I really hated seeing it was from Georgia. Before casting stones about another's state you should better know you own state laws.
We here in Georgia can not even own a simple kingsnake that we catch in our yards,BUT we CAN however catch a rattlesnake and keep it. We can not keep a corn snake that we catch in our yard,BUT we CAN keep that water moccasin that we found while fishing. Just food for thought, before casting a stone at another's state maybe know your own a little better.
Also not sure what town you live in but if the sheep goat and cattle are running free in town.....hmmm.....think maybe its time to move.
Please dont make us Georgianslook anymore redneck that the news station already do.

why on earth do you need a permit for a leopard gecko but not a Tokay? And.... A FERRIT?! OMG...I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that you need a permit for a dwarf hamster! I bet they don't make you get a permit to have a child though.

Just got home from visiting family in NJ & NYC. I didn't realize all the laws but know they fee you to death! Maybe I am a bit sheltered & niave but I never thought it was all that bad. Of course, I never lived there, only visited.

But it is GREAT to be back in the south!! I love living in SC!:D

I was mostly joking. I've been to Jersey, and most everywhere else in the US. Granted, there's always bad parts of every state and town, I spent about a month there and wasn't really impressed. Then again, I'm not impressed with Georgia either. Especially not the government, we have some really pointless laws as well as every state.
I do know a good deal about GA. The reason you can keep a rattlesnake and a water moccasin, tho I wouldn't know why, is because they are considered a nuisance and are not protected like the corn snake or the king snake is.

They whole "running the town" comment was more of a figure of speech. In other words, farming and livestock are greatly dependent on. They are all fenced in and contained. I live in south central Georgia, therefor it is expected that we are mostly crops and livestock.
I don't think that I could ever make Ga look more redneck than the news did to my town. We were dubbed the "Reading Capital of the World" and they went to the very outskirts of the county and interviewed the farmers who didn't have enough money to properly educate their kids. They were in 6th and 7th grade and still reading "See Spot Run." And those were the only people they interviewed, they didn't even bother with the high school or any of the public schools in town.

I'm sorry for making it sound as if I were "casting stones" at another state. It was not intentional.

Also, if you want a laugh, just take a look at our Blue Laws. Things like you can not tie a giraffe to a pole in Atlanta, keep a donkey in a bathtub, spit from a bus or a car but you can from a truck, or keep an ice cream cone in your back pocket if it is Sunday. http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/united-states/georgia?page=0
Every state has blue laws, most of which are quite stupid and usually no longer enforced or valid.

I have to admit the hamster one is a little ... weird. But hey we can't even own ferrets out here in california. People still smuggle them in from other states tho. And you have to find a vet that's even willing to see and treat them.

I dunno about reptiles tho, what needs a perment or not.
