I use turpinoid and black oil paint(and white) to make a varying degree of darkness. It makes a base coat on the canvas that helps with the layering involved in oil paintings.

Ive only ever taken art classes in high school. I was taught never to use any sort of black paint, but to mix your three primary colours to get what you want.
I only use red, blue and yellow paints on all of my work. Its cheaper, but theres a lot of mixing involved.
Ive thought of taking classes, but I dont think I need to. Plus i'm limited with time.

Sure, but I mix my own darks.
I bought a tube of black in highschool and got ripped apart.
