My wife and I have decided to open a pet store here in town. God knows this town needs one badly. We are trying to think of ideas. So I need some help. My son wants Godzilla's House Of Reptiles. But Im not sure. Any ideas would be great thank you

I don't have any name ideas but that's exciting news! I hope you're incredibly successful. My husband owned a reptile shop years ago and although it was a lot of work, it also brought a lot of joy. Good luck!

Thank you!! I was going to just a home based business. But here in Bakersfield there is a big need for a store that caters to Reptiles. All we have here is ***** and ******** and the isnt working out so well. I really think it would be a positive thing and a way to help kids learn more. Our goal is for classrooms to make a field trip to us or us to them and teach them more about these awesome creatures.

My advice would be to pick a name that is a bit more flexible, in case you at some point decide to expand into fish or even dogs and cats. Also, I'd suggest Godzilla might not be quite the idea you want to put in the head of the reticent mom being dragged into the store by her child that has developed an interest in reptiles. :)

I hope you've thought long and hard about this... remember, the vast majority of new businesses fail. Be careful and make sure to protect your personal assets. Talk with a lawyer about the details of incorporation and especially liability insurance. Don't believe anyone who tells you you DON'T need a lawyer when starting a business (especially retail). They are either stupid or lucky, or more likely both.

Good luck to you! I hope to visit your shop one day in the not too distant future so you can tell me what a buzzkill I was being "back in the day". :)

You could say something "exotic pets" instead of reptiles in case you do want to expand. My boyfriend and I are dying to open our own pet store as well. It will probably be several years before it is even a possibility. The ones out here are okay, not the cleanest around. There isn't one really in our part of town either, so we have to drive kind of far to buy feeders for our snakes. Good luck to you.

I hate to be a buzz kill as well, but small businesses are hurting real bad right now. My buddy owns a pet store currently and he is having hard times. The economy is going to flounder for another 10 to 16 months and people are only going to tighten thier belts. Not to mention that started the process now with a lease and permits, you wouldn't be in business until after the holiday season, which is the most profitable. By the time you got your name out there and a customer base it would be close to the end of the summer which is when pet stores hit their doldrums. If you do decide to sign a lease, please negotiate an "out claus" in the event that you can't turn a profit so that you won't be forced into paying out the remainder of the lease. Also, you should heavily negotiate the lease price and you should always get "build out" and/or a few months of free rent. If you negotiate right, especially in this market, you could get a few months free rent and some money off per sq foot. Best of luck

How about:

(insert son's name here)'s Rockin' Pets.
that'd be cool. yeah, small businesses are really hurting. we know the people that own our local pet store and i was just talking to the wife this morning. she said they're not making hardly any money, no body wants to spend at a pet store right now.
aany way, good luck

Best of luck with the new store. Be sure to fill us in on how it's going, I'm quite curious.
