Picky Eater

I have 2 geckos, one absolutely devours the mealworms like theres no tomorrow, the other, well he hasnt eaten any in a very long time.

Now, I just watched a tiny little gnat thing fly through the mesh and he hunted and ate it instantly, so I know he is just being picky about mealworms..

Now the question is, will he kill himself out of stubborness, or will he finally get desperate and accept the worms? I really, really do not want to have to deal with crickets again, plus the the other gecko adores the worms.

My gecko switches all the time. I wouldnt risk your little geckos life over it. I think you should bite the bullet and get crickets. You could even try roaches or some other kind of worm. Small supers or silk worms are worth a shot.

Yeh, I agree. Try lobster roaches, silworms, and even crickets if he still won't eat anything else.
Hope he gets back to eating! ;)

I have had the same problem for a while now. Bling (one of my leos) has not been wanting to eat anything I give him. Just a few days ago I tried to give him some mealworms, but he didn't want any. Then I tried crickets, he mowed right down on those. :) I guess I just had to switch up his diet. :)

Some geckos are more stubborn than others; I have one that I can never change his favour for mealworms. He will not even look at other type of foods; he has gone on hunger strike for more than 2 weeks if I keep offering him non-mealworms! I gave up everytime, and now I just let him eat whatever he likes.

Hmmph, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get some crickets! I was so happy at the prospect of not having to deal with them anymore :(

Maybe Merlin will get sick of the crickets after awhile ;)

I'll let you know once I get some crickets if he goes for them. Thanks to all of you!

Jesse is there a mealworm shortage in Canada as well? I know they said North America so I guess that includes you as well. Ive had to switch to cricket because of the mealworm shortage and I hate those things!

Well they haven't said anything to me yet, but they always try to talk me into getting superworms or something instead (because I think they cost more, haaha), but I guess it might really be because of the shortage. Then again I'm hardly buying in bulk since I only have 2 geckos.

Good news! I picked up some crickets and Merlins reaction to them was REDICULOUS (well maybe not if you consider how long its been since he ate).. But he was like a zombie craving flesh or something, I hadnt even put them in the cage and I just carried them near and he started frantically clawing at the glass with his eyes bugging out trying to get to them :D It was so cute and made me very happy that he was just picky, not sick. He just hunted down a good 8-10 or so I think...

SUCH a relief. He was getting skinny as a rail :( I didn't imagine for a second that the reaction to a different insect would be so drastic that they would just starve and not eat..

Spoiled children, the lot of them! ;)

This might seem alittle weird but ive just noticed that none of you guys on here talk about feeding your geckos locusts, thats all i give mine as i cant stand using crickets and mealies arent that greatly rated!

Andrew, I'm glad you brought that up. I just started a thread about appropriate prey (cricket, specifically) size for geckos and mentioned seeing a pic of a leo eating a bug that I had, until I saw that pic, thought would have been way too big for it. I didn't recognize it and later on found out it was a locust. I'm not sure why locusts aren't mentioned as food around here. None of the pet stores I've been to sell them. I had never heard of them as being a food source until seeing the pic (it was from UK). Do the pet stores over in Scotland sell them? Maybe it's a regional thing?

yeah i thought it must be a regional thing too but locusts are the most used feeders for most reptiles in Scotland, i really couldn't use anything else. Cant stand crickets! ha!
ill try and get a wee video or sumething up of my leos chasing some locusts, they love them!

I hate crickets too! Unfortunately that's all I have right now (*cringe*) but I'm starting a breeding colony of mealies soon!:main_yes: :main_yes: :main_yes:
