The hole on the top keeps the gecko from being able to push out the substrate. I also have my hole on the top for all my juveniles and adults.

Oh, I use paper towels in the moist hide. Tried some sphagnum moss but just smelled kinda musty to me and I was worried about it harboring bacteria. I think I feel safer with the paper towels, just have to moisten them/change them more often

Mine haven't used the moist hide since i got them. Guess they aren't shedding so they don't need it.

A lot of mine live in their moist hides, they love them. I do use the hole on the top for females with their layboxes, for the reasons mentioned...it's to keep it clean so they can't dig the cocofiber out. For males I usually have the hole on the side and use strictly paper towels to keep the environment cleaner for them, and to lessen impaction risk.

Here are a few of my home made ones.

mine basicly. However, i put a old mealie container right sideup on it, put a hole through the bottom on the container and the top of the hide, added some tubing and now i can fill up the mealie container with water and let it drip into the humid hide. Ive caught rango drinking from the end of the tube a fewtimes.

Everyone feeds their leos differently. I like to have a constant supply of mealworms in their dishes at all times with an exception of 2-3 days in between some weeks waiting on mealworms.

Usually a week after they hatch I'll began feeding them by dropping a few mealworms near the opening of an hide to get their food response. Once I know they're eating on their own, usually within two weeks of hatching, I'll leave a shallow dish in their tub with mealworms in it.

Then usually by a month, they will always know where the food is at all times.

Yes, all my geckos eat from the dish. Sometimes I'll mix it up and feed them crickets once a month, but they never have a problem finding the mealworms from the dish.
