Please help...sick leo!

Hey, all

I'm very new to reptile ownership, so I inadvertently let my new little leo get very thin before i realized that something was very wrong.

I've had her for about a month, and she has appeared healthy for most of that time (eating and eliminating normally). However, she started to get dehydrated about a week ago and I started misting her tank regularly. She was having some dry yellow discharge from her vent and so I started soaking her and offering her water from a variety of sources. I turned the temperature up in the tank (about 80 degrees now).

Her belly is also discolored: bluish purple. But it could be that she's been like this the whole time I've had her...I just didn't want to over-handle her so I didn't notice.

I don't have access to a good reptile vet at the moment, but the man I called said I should just keep soaking her in warm water and just sort of wait it out.

She was eating, but I think she has stopped: she wouldn't eat mealworms, can't catch crickets (she's clumsy and just kind of hits the side of the tank). The man at the pet store also dropped her (if that matters). She seemed fine but I wonder if that's the discoloration?

My setup is a 10 gallon aquarium. She has a heat lamp and a basking rock, along with a tupperware that serves as a moist hide and then a little shady dry cave. She has a big ceramic waterbowl and a Pringles lid that I also fill with water. I mist twice a day (or as necessary).

Please help! =(

Actually, I take the not eating part back: she just grabbed a cricket off the tweezers for me and I found some stool in her tank.

Is there a way I can boost the temperature? I live in Maine, and I have a heat lamp on the warm side and also the heated rock (so the air temperature is 80, but it must be warmer on the rock).

You need a UTH, Under tank heating pad. This will heat the tank from below and warm the surface and the leo MUCH better then the heat lamp. Do you have the propper suppliments? She needs a calcium, D3 and vitamin suppliment. Also hides, 1 humid, 1 cool and a warm hide. Stop the misting imo, it may be raising the humidity in the tank wich isnt good for leos, only the humid hide should be humid so they can use it as they need. Those temps need to be lower 90s on the hot side and 80ish on the cool. She very cold right now which is making her inactive and not allowing her to eat or digest. What are you using on the bottom of the tank??

Heated rocks are generally a good way to burn a reptile badly. For Leos it's highly recommended to have an under tank heater (UTH) regulated by a rheostat/lamp dimmer.

I also recommend a probe thermometer or cheap infrared thermometer to check floor temperatures of the tank. Leos are dependent on belly heat to maintain metabolism, so air temperatures generally are not a concern.

All together, an UTH (for 10gal tank), lamp dimmer, and thermometer will cost roughly 25-35 dollars under the right circumstances.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I know I must come across as an ignorant newbie who doesn't love their pet, but I honestly tried to do my research before picking her up.

I will get an UTH this weekend and hopefully that will help. Her substrate is paper towels (it was Reptile Carpet but she couldn't see the crickets). I will stop the misting and switch to just keeping her humid hide humid.

I do have a thermometer already so that I can check the temperature.

Oh, also, she is supplemented and I dust all her crickets, so as long as she eats she will be getting everything she needs nutritionally.

She died just now :(

Thanks again for all of your help. I'm sure I will be back if/when I get another leo. But this time I will do better research before hand. I thought I knew the basics and everyone at the pet store was so nice...now I know better.

Sorry for your loss. :( I think the only thing you did wrong was the lack of a UTH and perhaps a little more research. I don't think the animal being dropped by the pet store clerk helped much either. Could have had internal damage. Bob
