Poop

I've at times wondered why we are so obsessed with gecko poop. They poop too much, they don't poop enough, it's stinky poop, its runny poop, it's hard poop, babies poop more often than adults, is this poop? Then we have to clean up the poop. We even go as far, on occasion, to pick apart the poop. Last but not least, it's very important to take along poop to the vet visit. Fresh poop of course. Hopefully we will get an all clear on the poop.

Thanks for the opportunity to get this out of my system :)

PS- I once had a cat named Poop. It was the only thing he would answer to.

Hahaha! It is an odd obsession, but it actually is very important. You can tell a lot about the health of an animal by its poop.

Who picks it apart though? :main_huh: I've never picked anyone's poop apart before!

Yea...I have picked apart some poop before...lol. When I see a perfect looking poop (well formed dark color with urate chalky white) it kinda feels like my kids got good marks in an exam of something. Hahaha. Sometimes I'll take it to show my husband too.

Y'all wanna see an OCD group of poop examiners, get into the dog world. OMG I can't tell you how many poop threads I've answered on so many different dog forums. BUT like another poster said, it's all in the poo. It's the first sign onf health issues in any animal. I don't think I worried as much about my boys poo when they were babies as I do when I get an inconsistant poo from my dogs :)

BTW... do geckos Pee?

I saw a microscope video of the parasite load in a gecko I was bringing home. It was gross but very good to see. Hookworms, and a huge load that would have killed her. I wonder what can be seen with a lighted magnifying glass. :main_robin: Last show we did, there was a lady that used one to sex very young geckos, so I ordered one from ebay. I don't know about picking apart poop to examine tho :inquisitive:

Usually worm cysts are microscopic, but you might get lucky and see 1. Don't count on it tho unless it's a super strong magnifying glass and you know what the parasite looks like in cyst form. Plus a lot of time fecals are done with a stain that will enhance the slide to give the viewer a better read of the slide content. .

Amazing they are so small when they look huge under a microscope! Our vet is very good in sharing information with me so now there is a prepared index card with "ask the doctor questions." Thanks for your comment, it will prompt me to see if I can find photos of different parasites, and more specific questions for the vet. Plus I really need to get that book "Understanding Reptile Parasites." Amazon here I come!

I don't think you'll be able to see anything with a magnifying glass. I have seen pinworm eggs at 100x with a microscope. Here is how it looks (I just took the image through the eyepiece):

If I can see any with a magnifying glass the poor thing is in bad shape! I mainly want to be able to sex the babies a little sooner with the mag. We usually see the vet almost once a month so fecal tests are no issue. I did order the parasite book so that will be interesting.

I've been thinking about writing an article for Gecko Time called "Everybody Poops" though I'm afraid we'll get sued by the people who wrote the book (if you don't know about this book, you've probably never had a pre-schooler).

I have a preschooler but never read the book, but you could entitle it "Everybody's LEO poops" and avoid the copywright infingement by altering it 25%

Hahaha I knew that was dog poo. Funny thing they forgot to mention was tell them that when your dog leaves large formed poos that are often quite oderous it's a result from too much fiber in their diet. Soft mushy poos are the result of too much fats in the diet, and well the puddles we just call them cow patties here but that is usually indicitive of a food allergy, upper GI issues (parasite, chronic colitis which could be fiber induced,) or anxiety. The super hard poos is often a result of a diet way too high in proteins. I figure if they're gonna go so far as to go into such great detail as to describe the poos they should at least tell you the CAUSE of the poo's form. Another huge fail on Purnia's part yet again in my book. Now how much would you have loved to put that info sheet together for Purina??? :p

Yeah, well it's Purina. Really you can't expect too much from them. Except ironically, maybe some diarrhea. :main_laugh:

Aliza, that's a great idea. There seems to be much question in both frequency and appearance among newbies. It would be helpful if they could access a quick read to help them understand.
