Okay so my Leo Mnyama has recently lost a lot of weight from his tail. He is still eating, is very lively and active. But recently he has lost his tail weight and his spine is a bit protrudy. I think it is stick tail, and when I can finally get a fresh stool sample from him my mum is going to take it to the vet school and have her students look through it and see what they can find. Another thing he lives secluded and all the leos eat from the same cricket batch, so why is he the only one with symptoms.
Here are some pictures, if it is not stick tail, what else could it be?

Btw I know he is small, he has had stunted growth since he was an egg, but he eats healthy and always has food.

Parasites. All nutrients injested are stolen by whatever is inhabiting your poor gecko. Take him to a Vet ASAP to get a fecal and properly medicate the gecko.

Good luck!

Courtney, you are lucky living in Auburn. They have reptile veterinarians. Your little guy needs to go as soon as possible. Home remedies will not help.

So even if the students were to figure out what is causing his problem I would still have to go to a vet clinic to get the proper medicine, could I not order them from a pet store?

You wouldn't find medication you need at the pet store. Whatever specific medication you will need, will be given to you via your vet. Hope everything turns out well.

So I got medicine from my pet store, he uses it all the time on reptiles with parasites, all his herp breeders use it as well. So he has received his max dosage and now I'm trying to fatten him up with wax worms and repashy.

Would you mind sharing what it is your giving for the parasites?, never heard of a retail pet store having medicine for parasites that's a new one for me:main_robin:. So i'm assuming you seen a vet and determined your leo had a parasite and was dosed according?. I would also be light on the wax worms, you state he eats healthy and is not refusing, so you can use other feeders during this process you don't need to rely on wax worms. I can suggest silkworms.

Did the vet perform a fecal test for parasites? Different types of parasitic infections require specific medication treatments. Panacur seems to be handed out indiscriminately, and can be found in pet stores... but this drug is difficult to dose for small reptiles like leos. Not to mention, it is only effective for worms... not for protozoan or coccidia.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything but it sounds like your trying to go the cheapest route possible. The best thing to do would be take him to the vet and let them determine what is wrong and how to go about and help your gecko with the proper medication. Alot of these people know what they are talking about so I would trust them and take their advice. Just looking out for whats best for your gecko.

This gecko needs to see a vet. If you try to treat it now without the right type of medicine it will likely die by the time you realize its treatment is not working.

Many times pet stores treat the animals themselves to save costs. The thing is that if the treatment doesnt work they just order another gecko. Problem solved for them!

Vet visits are not that expensive. You are talking around $100 (for visit, fecal test, and medicine).

The question is... is the life of your pet worth $100? (should be priceless ;) )

It is parasites, my mum students looked through his poo and found them. The stuff I used to treat him is called diatomaceous earth food grade. He uses it and all of his herp breeders use it for their leos. He told me how much to use, and right now I am waiting for a waxworm shipment to come in to help fatten him up, but I have him on a gut loaded cricket diet as well. For those wondering, my mum is an immunologist who teaches at our vet school.
In response to RampantReptiles, the pet store I go to is a small business and I have known him for years, he cannot afford to lose a pet and order a new one like that. I have trust in his opinion and advice. He has told me of his past cases that he has used the stuff for and how the stuff works really well for reptiles. Also another friend who breeds leos says the stuff works.

Diatomatous earth is used here in the USA primarily as a water filtering agent... in swimming pools and for reverse-osmosis water systems. I have NEVER heard of it used as a medication for a parasitic infection in a living creature!

You came here for help, and are not taking the advise of literally every person who has responded. You need to take your gecko to a veterinarian to have a fecal test performed to diagnose if and what kind of parasite your gecko has. Then, it will need the appropriate medication to treat it. The longer you put this off, the less chance your gecko has to survive. When it dies, it will be YOUR fault because YOU didn't follow through with YOUR responsibility to properly care for this beautiful, gentle creature.

Do you even know what kind of parasite it is?. Doesn't it strike you odd that someone is able to prescribe you something without knowing what exactly is going on. You cant just go to someone and say my leo has parasites without any specification and expect to receive proper medication....:main_huh:. Like Marcia said, please go to the vet and get a proper diagnosis so if it is a parasite, it can get treated properly. Do it for your leos!:main_yes:

My mum took in another sample of his poo in, and the test came back negative, so it seems the stuff worked very well in killing off the parasites. Beside the liquid grade can also be used in treating internal parasites like the food grade. For all of you saying I need to get a fecal sample done, I have been getting them done at a vet school so I knew what he had and the pet store guy helped me out, and my lizard is fine now and he is on his was to being fattened up.

Another thing, you do not have to go to a vet to get all things taken care of. We have new born kittens and they got feline chlamydiae, and you know what, we are using tea to treat their eyes and not antibiotics, and guess what, their eyes have cleared up wonderfully. So unusual and out of there treatments can work.
