Power Outage...

Just wondering what people do or plan to do if their power goes out. Mine was just out for about 6 hours and I felt bad that my leos were cold. I was thinking a generator would probably be best if you had one (a friend was on her way with one to loan me when the power came back on), but what would you do if you didn't have access to a generator? I was thinking you could put them in a smaller container and use heat packs like the ones they get shipped with. Any other ideas? I realized this morning that I need to have a plan for when this happens again. Also, do you think that if the power goes out, that you should provide heat right away, or is it safe to let them go without for a few hours (the temp in my house was 60, so not too cold) - I've only had 1 time where the power has gone off for more than 24 hours - it's usually only an hour or so... Ideally I would like to plug them into a generator right away...

My power went out for about 4 hours on Thursday night. I even had eggs incubating.
Leo's will be ok for a 6 hour period without heat. It's won't do anything to them.

For my eggs though, I put the incubator by my fireplace to keep them at a steady 82 Degrees.

For short power outages i don't for see an issue with leaving the geckos alone. For longer outages i would have a survival pack for the geckos. Including heat packs and the basic needs to maintain temp for the geckos.

also i didn't even consider incubators, possibly battery backups like companys use for their computers. i know there are many different ones out there. not sure on battery life but i would assume there are different ones providing hours worth of back up

I have heat packs for power outages for the geckos. For the incubator, unless the power outage is part of a major snowstorm and is widespread, I would call someone who isn't in the outage area and bring my incubator there. I actually did this last May when my power went out locally. I brought it to a friend a few blocks away and plugged it in there. The next day, though, I found 3 new eggs and had to walk those over to put them in the incubator!

These would probably be excellent for gecko enclosures now you mention it. A heat mat uses only about 14 watts, wheras a computer uses more like 300 so you could get hours and hours of heating out of one! *heads for well known online marketplace*

You can hold them for a long time by the fire than put them back and the will probably be fine for a few hours. It will probably just like the night time heat for them.

Before I got my UTH, I used to let Stripes sleep on my stomach after he eats so he gets under belly heat and digest properly. So I guess if your power goes out you could do the same.

We lost power for 10 days during a hurricane in Sept. We were prepared with a generator but used it to run the window unit to keep the Cresteds cool. Our temperatures varied from 45F to 85F and our geckos didn't really mind not having heated racks for the week and a half. The single egg in the un-powered incubator even hatched weeks later. If the temps are really cold it's a great idea to have heat packs around but they aren't necessary in moderate weather.

I live in NH and i was hit with the ice storms a few months ago and we didnt have power for 5 days and i did not have any generators or anything and my house was around 25 to 30 degree's. I lost my two 12 inch oscars and my aquarium water had a layer of ice on the top of it.... i go over to my leo tank expecting to have a total loss and to my surprise my little guy comes walking out of her hide looking a little pale but other then that completly fine.

the last time i lost power i ran my laptop on battery and used my USB heated gloves to keep my gecko warm. not a great solution for long term power loss but it worked great. i don't have a big battery but on the most efficient power setting i can get a few hours.

Omg I know it's an old post but I laughed out loud imagining one of the large scale breeders doing that.... I must say It'd be the cutest image ever XD....
