Im not keeping this secret anymore it really does make the biggest difference. When shooting anything with delicate colors ( ie leo's) use a 50% gray background instead of pure black, white or a solid color. There are 2 reasons this makes such a dramatic difference . 1. Neutral gray helps your eye focus on colors with in it. 2. Neutral gray is very friendly to your camera's automatic meters. So try it out and show your love. pce.

excellent tip, thanks! would you suggest using this color in a light tent?

yes it will yield the same results in a tent.

Forgot to say that you can get artist gray scale pads from Strathmore LINK that give you a couple different choices. A little darker or lighter can some times help push the warms/cools without misrepresenting them.

if your getting a dark background do an auto contrast and auto levels in photoshop. Im not a fan of most automated adjustments but these in particular are great. They are very long algorithms that are customized to each image. Use auto color sparingly it sometimes produces a bad color shift. I have made an action that just does all three with auto color last so that I can just give her a little undo if I need. If you dont have photoshop you can use anyfree editor and just adjust curves yourself.

on my non artsy photos, i might only adjust the levels and sharpen the photo a bit. on my artsy photos i will sometimes do a few things to edit them.

here is some of my artsy stuff http://robinism.deviantart.com/
