I'm glad your little one arrived safely, and sorry it dropped it's tail. I had that happened once to a gecko I shipped as well. Those boxes get tossed around quite a bit in transit.

According to the Lacy Act, ALL live animals that are shipped must have "LIVE" and the common name, scientific name, and quantity clearly labeled on the box. Many times the carriers will open boxes to inspect the contents if they are only labeled "live".

Thanks for that info. I did not know that.
I have never seen all that stuff on an animal shipper before.
All I have ever seen is: "Perishable, harmless live reptiles", or something like that.

Do you put all that stuff on your shippers?

I had a little one drop her tail enroute and just put a little non pain reliever Neosporin on it. She healed up just fine and her tail is 2/3 grown back in about 3 weeks. Good luck with your little one!

Why would your gecko shipment be intercepted by the Dept of Agriculture?

The OP said the box was labeled that it contained a live animal.

Do you think UPS opened it? The box did get re-routed by mistake!!
I doubt UPS opened the box. In my case, it was a standard agricultural inspection. The California Ag Dept is a little overzealous perhaps. Also the geckos were held for pickup, which they said sometimes does raise a flag. Still, I'm sure only a small percentage of boxes ever gets checked. They knew there was a live animal in there, but since the species name was not listed, they didn't know what it was. So I suppose it's understandable that they opened it, from their point of view. Of course they claimed that the tail had already been dropped when they looked in the box.

I had 4 baby Florida King Snakes delivered today. The shipper is not certified to send snakes via Fed Ex, so it didn't say anything about live animals on the box. As long as they're packed properly and delivered by noon in good weather, there's not usually a problem.

Absolutely! When people don't follow the laws, they are making it harder on those of us who do to ship reptiles legally and safely.

I agree. My point is that if you're going to let them know you're shipping live animals, you had better let them know what kind by clearly labeling the species name on the outside of the box. Otherwise you're risking what happened to me, the Agriculture Department opening the box, etc...
