Project Secret Squirrel

So I've always illegally harbored pets during my stay in college (mostly fish). Well I picked up my first gecko over the summer and needed a solution to keep my tank out of view (university policy indicates that that as long as something is not in plain sight, there will be no invasive searches of your room).

I also recall a while ago reading a couple posts about fellow college students "hiding" their geckos in their dorm rooms. So I thought I'd share my little diy solution that I built over the summer.

Problem no. 1: hide gecko
So I went to home depot and decided to build something around this shelf here:
Workforce Storage Organizer

It measures 36"x 18" and holds up to 150 lbs. per shelf.

After some brainstorming and roughly a day of measuring once and cutting twice :D, I came up with this:

I was pretty happy with my little project until I realized my problem no. 2... I had absolutely no room above the tank to fit my arm so I could do maintenance on the tank easily.

First I needed a way to gain easy access through the top. So I cut through the grates of the shelf making holes.

This lead me to problem no. 3... I had big holes through my shelves!
Essentially, I needed a solution that would keep the tank out of sight while not compromising the functionality of the shelf and actually being able to put something on top of it.

So I came up with this - parting shelves!

Finally, I thought I'd also share some of the other functions of my creation.

First, as you can see here I used hinges in place of corner brackets:

I did this for portability and trying to keep my little project as low key as possible when moving in.
As you can see, it can be easily removed from the shelf and is collapsible.

Wow, great job with the shelf/cabinet setup! It looks awesome. Your university's policy sounds insane though; you should at least be able to keep fish without hiding them!

That is a awesome idea, I wish i would have been as creative when I was in college and I would have been able to keep a couple of my critters. GREAT JOB!
