We put our first couple together last night two SHTCTB. Afterwards the male's hemipenis didn't go back in and he even started trying to pull/bite it off?
We of course prevented him from doing this and immediately prepared a sugar water bath which I remembered from reading on the forums once some while ago.
Changed paper towels made them wet (he's always on paper towels, in a tub on his own) and this morning we checked as soon as we got up, it was still not back in.
After reading Paulnj and MSMD's stories about their leos also prolapsing I was wondering: is it better to soak in sugar water or saline solution(since MSMD was told by the vet to soak in sterile saline solution) What else can I do except soaking 3x day and keeping his paper towels clean and damp? Are there any ointments that would help? I heard both Paulnj and MSMD using the word preparation H. I live in the Netherlands so never heard of it, what is it and is this good for prolapses? Do I need to make sure it's free from bacteria by using something like Betadine (don't know if you know betadine in the us/uk but is a iodine anti bacterial you can also use on wounds etc. it comes in drops, several solutions and creams) or is putting glucose cream on it better?? please any tips are welcome just really want to know what's best to use for our little boy and I' ll do my best to get my hands on it or something similar since I might not be able to find it here. sorry if you have to hear this for the billionth time.
Here are some pics of the male.

We've had a young one have a hemipenal prolapse. We kept him on clean moist paper towels and gave him warm sugar water soaks several times a day. It took about 4 days but it finally retracted. Good luck!

I had a male that had a few hemipenale prolapses, and they finally retracted after some baths. But that looks more serious, I would seek veterinary attention immediately. I say this because it looks like more than the hemipene is stuck out, it actually looks like its ripped.

Maybe someone with more background dealing with this sort of thing will be able to tell you more. But I would get to the vets with him!

Yes.... it does look injured. Keep him on moist paper towel, and soak him in syrupy sugar water several times a day. You can also apply aloe-based Preparation H on it after the soaks. It may form a scab, but watch for signs of it becoming necrotic, or turning black, and take him to a vet if it does.

Yeah I thought it looked weird but this is what it looked like already before he even touched it :S I' ll try finding something similar as the preperation H with as much of the same ingredients as possible and check ingedients that aren't in the preparation H but are in a dutch brand to see if they aren't toxic or anything.
Is it ' normal' to form a scab? not something to run to the vet for?
Please don't think I' m someone that doesn't want to spend money on a vet thing is he couldn't have chosen a worse time since we don't have a car this week. The vet we go to for fecals is only 10 mins away by bike but he doesn't know enough about reptiles so we gotta drive a pretty long way but can't until next week:S
Will keep it as clean as possible until then and I know that swelling is a thing to look out for and necrosis is the worst so I' ll definetely keep an eye on that.
Is there a special reason for using a aloe-based ointment? If so I' ll try finding an aloe-based as well but Im not sure wether I' ll be able to find it. So if it's not really necessary that's be great.

Also does anbody know an online store that sells the aloe-bases preparation H and ships internationally and can do this as fast as possible :S??

yikes... he definately hurt his "little friend"

Poor thing!

Put him in a tub with no food(stressed geckos don't eat anyway) so he can't get any further contamination from food items or their defication.

Mine was a "simple" prolapse with no infury like that, so watch that extra carefully. Change the substrate daily and clean with saline after the soaks, then apply the preperation H with vaseline over it. That was suggested to me (after mine went back in) to keep him from eating preperation H. Whether that is good or not I don't know, but it sounds better than inguesting preperation H.

That hurts to even look at... poor guy

thanks for all the replies. yeah it scared us too :S
we cleaned him with boiled (and of course cooled down) water aftr th soaks but saline sounds better thanks for the tip. I' ll try to get my hands on some prep H and search the net if I can find it anywhere around or let it ship to the netherlands and use the next best thing until now, another ointment for the same treatment but don't think I' ll be able to find a aloe-based one over here.
any tips on online websites are welcome! thank you so much, I hope he's okay. But he showed no interest in it anymore at all after we prevented him from biting it again. So that's a great relief otherwise I wouldnt be able to sleep knowing what he'd be pulling off once I was asleep :S:p

Saline can easily be bought in many product forms and is technically SWFI with 0.9% Sodium Chloride in each 100ml..

It can be made with clean water and an amount of 0.9 Grams of Sodium Chloride (Table Salt) per 100 ml of water.

I hope to never have this problem, after talking to Paul and reading this thread..

Good Luck !

thank you we're going to do what we can for him.
At the moment it's a little bit swollen but hasn't really got any better or worse th last days. So we have no idea what's going to happen. If it still hasn't gotten any better when we have a car again (somewhere next week) we're going to take him to the vet. just have to wait and see.. :(

My fiance's best friend's gecko (yeah, hate when people do the best friends uncle's brother's sister's gf thing too!) had one very very similar to what yours looks like... Vet stitch. Have you had a chance to go yet?

We wanted to wait and see if it would go back for a few days and do the sugarwater soaks and use the preperation H. At first it seemed to get a little better then it was the same as when it had just happened but staed nice and pink and not swollen. but 3 days ago there was a tiny darker dot and it had started becoming a little bit more swollen, so I knew for sure it wasn't going to work and that it was becoming necrotic, so we called the vet that day to make an appointment and we went there two days ago.
We didn't really know how the procedure went so we thought he might have to stay for the night or something and that he was going to be fully anaesthetized (we went there at 5 pm)
But he just fixed it right in front of us lol.
Still it wasn't nice to see him wiggle like that he didnt like it at all and I had to hold him ral firm.
He got a local anaesthetic first (if that's what you call it?), then he just grabbed his hemipenis with tweezers and pulled it out as much as he could and cut it off with tiny scissors :stunned: and he was like ow this is nothing all the time, all I could think was what if they'd do this to you....
There was only a little bit of blood and afterwards he got an antiobiotic injection in it's leg which went in so deep.
sorry but I' ve been at the vets plenty of times but never had to go with my leos yet and it's hard to see them in pain :)
He said he didn't use stitches anymore cause in his opinion these get infected easier than without. I don't really mind as long as everything goes well but we're keeping an eye on him and he's staying away from the ladies for the next couple of months lol ;)
