PS1, PS2 & PS3 Compatable games

Well I spent most of the night trying to find out about this stuff.

Zach told Ken he wanted a PS2 for Christmas. The next day he saw me looking at PS3s online and said "I don't want a 3, I want a 2!!!" It took me a few days to figure out why...... he was told the PS1 games he has will not work on PS3. I was at Taget and figured I ask them there what they knew about it. One of the guys said the PS3 80g does work with the PS1 & PS2 games..... I had them pull out the box so we could check the box. It says it has limited capabilities with both PS1 & PS2 games. Well determined to find out which games I did a lot of digging..... all the way to downloading the manual for the PS3 to find this site (hope this helps others)......

From the advertizing I heard of the PS3 it was to play all PS games. Go Figure.

It should on the 80g, but there are some software updates that it may need for some of the older PS1 games.

If you can get your hands on the 60 gig PS3 then you should be ok. The problem is they are no longer in production with the new 80 and 40 gig ps3's out on the market.

Before I get into details on the different models the term emulation is pretty important. Emulation in this case is that the PS3 is creating a virtual/fake PS2 or PS1 system within the PS3 system itself so that it can play older games.

The 60 gig PS3's still had the Emotion Chip (CPU) built into the system. The Emotion chip is actually the same chip the PS2 used. Which gave the PS3 hardware emulation of older games. Meaning that it actually has a PS2 chip built in for compatibility with older games (PS2/PS1). So in a sense the 60 gig PS3 is also a PS2 as well.

I have this version and have not had any problems really with playing any older games (especially after the latest updates)

Starting with the 80 and 40 gigs they ditched the emotion chip (probably for cost reasons) and started to creating a software emulated environment. Meaning that when you try to play older games the PS3 is actually running a program that creates a fake PS2 environment.

The problem with this is that because its a software/fake emulation the ability to play all of the older games is limited. At the same the performance has been found to be glitchy sometimes as well.

I don't know... if he wants the PS2- why not give him that? The PS slims are so sexy, anyway, plus are $99 versus what, $500? I mean, that's craziness for a video game system. There are lots of great PS1/PS2 games out there to play. I have no idea about the compatibility issues, though. That they are coming out with multiple versions of one system has me really confused. I like the Wii better, anyway... excepting the lusting after Halo 3. Oh well...

Fe, my younger brother, the video gamer of the family, doesn't want a PS3 either. First i think he realizes he can get more if he asks for cheaper things and second it isn't compatible with ALL his old games. He has entered them all into the playstation website above and some have audio difficulties and others have image errors and things like that.
If you enter "Spyro" this game has errors with audio, but if you enter "Crashbandicoot" it has no errors. Good luck!! Hope this helps.

Thats why I just play them on my computer. I only found 1 game that I want that I can't play and thats Halo 3 because I won't switch to Windows Vista.

I dont play that many games. Get him an original ATARI! $20 says he would be thrilled! Those things are amazing!

I am a xbox fan, and yeah my xbox 360 doesnt play my old xbox games. So I sold them..decided I would prefer the new ones. But if thats out of the question...get the ps2. If thats what he wants. Next year he will ask for the 3 I am getting a ps3 this year, I chose the 40 gig...its cheap and I dont need to play my ps2 games. Good luck!

I saw the Atari last Chistmas. It was something like $30.00 and came preloaded with all the cool classic games like devender, pac man, ect....... If I was to get a game consul, I would pick X box 360. Only because I love the halo games otherwise the PS3 because I don't own any of the games for any of them lol

I know PS2 will play PS1 games, and PS3 will play PS2 games, not sure about PS1. I have played PS2 games on my PS3.. Get him PS3, he will end up wanting it anyway, most of the new good games are only on PS3 or 360.. If you get him the 80GB you will get motor storm with it, its a sweet game and the graphics are amazing..

LOL I had already got the PS3 80g when I posted this thread. I wasn't about to have him complain in six months cause he couldn't buy new games for the PS2. All his games are compatible with the PS3 and if they aren't there is a update to the software that will correct the issues. Besides this is more for all of us in the house, not just him. I may have bought a few games that I like as well.

that is actually my biggest problem why i am not getting a ps3, i am not sure if i can play my old ps and ps2 games on it. i have heard mixed stories. thanks for the site.

Ps2 games should work with the PS3, I have played PS2 games with on my PS3. Call of duty 4 rocks, thats my game .

I'm not into violent games, enough of that crap going on in the news. If and when I manage to have time to play games I want it to be fun and put a smile on my face and make me forget all the crap in the news. :main_yes:
