Question regarding placement of thermostat probe

So, I have been placing it right next to the warm hide fastened against the glass with a suction cup and pointed down with the tip at a slant. I've seen a snake set up where the probe is just taped down flat. Will this work? The Herpstat I ordered doesn't come with a suction cup so I need to tape it down with masking tape. Can I tape it flat on the carpet next to the hide?

Yes, but do you tape it flat--horizontally or straight up and down vertically

flat horizontally just use some black electrical tape, it works good :B
