Quick question

I'm going to the not so fabulous all ohio reptile show next month to pick up a crested gecko. I've got the housing requirements down....the more vines and plants to climb on/hide in the better. I'll have some hides in there too. I was going to use either repti liner or tile on the bottom.

I know you don't want to stress them out with a big enclosure when they are small so I was looking at something like this. Obviously it's just a temporary setup until the crestie is big enough to go into a 10 gallon. Will that work for the first month or two while s/he grows?

My other question was about the CGD. How hard is it to switch them over to it if they are feeding on crickets? I was hoping to feed that with crickets/mealworms a few times a week.

I think the temporary enclosure is probably OK, although it's probably not as vertical as would be ideally. I put my crestie when I first got him at 1 month old in an exoterra 12"x12"x18" which I think is equivalent to a 15 gallon and he was fine. You may just want to go with the 10 gallon.

As I understand it, cresties do best with both crickets and CGD, although the young ones tend to eat more CGD. I would recommend feeding both. My feeding schedule for the last nearly 2 years is: Mon, Wed, Fri CGD; Tues. and Sun. crickets

I'm going to petsmart tonight to get everything unless it's cheaper to order it all online with shipping. So a big critter keeper until he can move up to a 10 gallon or will a 10 gallon be enough for s/he to handle?

You will want at least a 15 gallon tall. A 10 gallon will make the gecko feel cramped.

And, like Aliza said, you'll want to have a diet of crickets and CGD. The younger the gecko, usually the more crickets I'll feed. IE my adults get crickets twice a week with CGD daily and the babies and juvies get crickets every other day with CGD daily.

I use small kritter keepers for babies. But a large or XL will be perfect until older. You could probably go ahead and purchase the 15 gallon tall, but depending on the size of the gecko and how much stuff you put in the tank, the harder it will be to see.

I'm getting a baby and that's why I was asking about a kritter keeper until s/he grows. Once they are big enough they are going into a 20tall or a custom enclosure.

Babies can live in the small kritter keepers up to 4-6 months old depending on how fast they grow. About half of the KK filled with vines or plants should be fine.

Good because that's what I bought lol. The dimensions are 14.5x8.6"x9.6". I picked up two vines since that's all they had. The one looks like a pot leaf but oh well it will work for now. I'm ordering cgd this week and I'll get crickets at the show. I haven't had crickets in well over a year and I'm not missing it.

Kritter keepers are great for babies. God luck with the new gecko. Post pictures once you get the little guy.

That may be the medium or large you bought;) , but it will still work fine for a baby and you can use it longer.
If you dont like crickets you can feed them cgd only. They grow a little slower without them but they will still be healthy.

I will offer crickets maybe once every two weeks to babies if I have any left over from my other geckos, my adults havent had any in over a year.

I was thinking about getting a second one. I haven't even gotten my first and I already want more lol.

Should I get another critter keeper for the second one or would they be safe together? I'm thinking a second keeper would be best but thought I'd ask anyways.

2 kritter keepers...

Together you risk bullying, stress, tail nips, etc. I'd house all separately.

I'd worry about getting the 1st before you decide on the 2nd though. It may not be what you were expecting.
