They can be anywhere from solid red to snake eyed, and the degree of how how red they are can vary. A deep, dark red color can sometimes appear black. Oftentimes, hatchlings hatch out with an obvious red eye, and it gradually darkens with age.

So the simple answer is yes, they have to have red eyes, in either solid or eclipse form.

Are you sure they're solid black? It's a possibility they're just super dark red.

it can help to get some really good light directly at him, and have a loook at his eyes straight on. then you should be able to see the red.
if theyre black, then it musnt be an albino? just eclipse. i dunno.

RAPTOR stands for Ruby-eyed Albino Tremper Orange...so in order to be a RAPTOR, red eyes are a must :main_yes:

I have a gorgeous raptor girl, her eyes are like Garnets, super red, almost black. You have to look at the edge of her eyes to see the red, they are just amazing eyes :)

so if it doesn't have red eyes, it will be called an APTOR...? or just a patternless eclipse..?

What can be confusing is how the eyes change as the gecko grows. I don't know how APTOR eyes respond, but I've noticed when I handle my RAPTORs their eyes change from dark almost black to varying shades of red. They were about 1-2mo old when we got them and they still had solid red eyes but after a few more months they look like eclipse eyes.

APTOR is just a Patternless Striped Eclipse. So if your gecko was non Albino (s)he would be either an APTOR, if it was Patternless, or a Eclipse, if it had pattern.

Wrong, A APTOR is a leo that's Talbino patternless striped. NOT Homozygous Eclipse.
Albino Patternless Tremper ORange.

A RAPTOR is a Talbino eclipse patternless striped, The amount of Eclipse expressed in the eye dose matter,
If a Talbino patternless striped IS Homozygous Eclipse it's a RAPTOR. No matter what percent of Eclipse is expressed in the eye.
