im so sad to hear that Marcia. you are so full of knowledge when it comes to geckos and I hate to see this happen to you. I am dipping into breeding this year for the first time but just very few and only for me and my family. I wish you the best of luck and hope that breeders like you who really care about the animal can continue to do what u love.

Dont throw in the towel yet Marcia, we all need you, just have faith that it will all work out, maybe not how you expected it to, but it always works out. I wish you the best Marcia, and would hate to lose a respectable member of our community.

Mine will look worse I´m sure but I only get expensive feeders and I don´t like to breed them myself + friends pay maybe the half on Geckos from me.

But I must also say I´m good with planning and getting my stuff.
I payed 250$ for a 1.3 breeding stock for Diablo blancos with a male Raptor het DB and 3 Blanco females.
I learned how to get good nice and big geckos to a reasonable price even thought it is also the same way as everytime, you need friends out their that help you out. If I help my friends they help me (but the 1.3 for 250 was no friendship price it was jsut a good offer I took asap).

In the ende as Max said it´s a hobby BUT I´m not bad if I can go and get me a good steak from the profit even thought the higher goal is to produce the gckos from my projects.

Hey gang... I'm not throwing in the towel! It's just that if the economy continues the way it is and Golden Gate Geckos cannot be profitable, it doesn't make sense for it to be a business. I can't see paying for a business license & resale permit, Federal & State income tax, as well as CA State sales tax (going up to 9%). I might as well go back to being a hobbyist and spare myself all those expenses as well as all the paperwork I have to deal with!

I could never even imagine not having my geckos! I truly love them, and in all honesty I don't work with them for the money. I'm happy to break even if they can pay for themselves. LOL, all I can hope for would be that if for some reason I died tomorrow, that my legacy would be that I was someone who loved these beautiful creatures even if I didn't manage the business end of it very well!

if i would figure out my hour-wages, it might even be less :) :) , but i don't care i love working with the animals, just my electric bill alone was about 7000dollars last year, so i know how you feel, at shows people only see, what they think whats coming in, b ut forget the expenses.
so keep doing what you do, as long as you still enjoy it

when it comes to these animals i would do all the work every hour and every day for free. i dont have any one to answer to, no bosses or brandnames. and they are my animals that i get to breed, that i get to take care of. someone imfames once said, "if you do what you love you will never work a day in your life"

I learned along time ago that this hobby wasn't going to make me rich. I do it because I'm addicted to this....

great post Marcia :main_thumbsup:
So many people think it is a get rich endeavor, only to realize after they are in w-a-y over their heads just how much money and work is involved... and will still be unable to sell all their geckos. I think that's why we see people come and go in this hobby,
*nods* see this quite a bit and yet when you do try and explain the true costs of breeding (even small scale) ie: not just the food, equipment or heating but including vet fee's etc it goes in one ear and out the other with no stopping :main_rolleyes:
on the rare occasion I've made any 'profit' it's been ploughed straight back in ~ usually upgrading/replacing equipment etc .... it's a good job I don't do this for money :main_laugh:
Whisperer I agree ~ those babies are what makes it all worth while :main_thumbsup:

YOU are notttt 14 0.o there is no way, you know too much. most 14 yr olds I know are like...exsuse me for saying this stupid and illknowledagable, HECK most 17-18 yr olds I know are complete noobs! You have suprise me more and more Nigel...just had to say that.

o_O That's true up to a certain degree.. But I'm 15, and a lot of my friends are 12 and 13, and we've all been keeping animals for ages, and researching for even longer. That includes with leos (All 3 of us are also breeding). I think it's sad that the stereotype has had to come to this. :p I think everyone (regardless of age) should take good care of their animals!
