Not to be rude, but at 13 how do u afford to buy a leo and a full set up without your parents knowledge? All said and done, my set up plus leo was like $170

If your talking to me, LOL this stuff makes me laugh. A 13 year old can make plenty of money. I save my money....I cut lawns in the summer, and last summer i made well over 500 dollars. Thats not all, With winter here I shovel drive ways, and sure its not something i do every week, but so far with all the snow weve had i made 160 bucks. I did get money for christmas. That being said, Age really does not have anything to do with affording or buying stuff. Its more if he is ready for the commitment, and Experience and knowledge. You don't know if this kids rich, do you? Im not trying to be mean or rude, but if i were you, I would hush.:main_yes: Some 13 year olds have as much knowledge about these animals just as much as breeders. As i stated before, im not trying to be mean at all in any way, just saying.

Whooo..dont really think thats called for, but alrighty. I never said anything about not having knowledge about leos...just asked how you afforded it.

Guess 13 year olds are more responsible now...when I was 13 I just cared about hanging out with friends playing video games (yes, 10 years is sooo long ago haha)

OPTION 1:
Dad, it's for science class. I need to do a study on 2 animals of the same species.

When he questions why they can't be in the same tank...

Dad, one will have climbing options. The other will not. I want to prove that geckos truly are capable of and possibly prefer being able to reach the higher elevations.

I actually got my first reptile, my beardie, using the science class excuse. Last year I took zoology and I actually brought her in and did a whole presentation on reptile keeping. :main_thumbsup:

I wasn't trying to be rude or imply that 13 year olds couldn't make money. I hope you guys didn't take it like that.

It's just I grew up in a family where we didn't get allowance, and there weren't odd jobs to be done or money to be made at that age. And $$ for geckos wasn't even an option...movies with friends was a fantasy, and any pocket money was scarce and never steady enough to support a pet, even if my parents let me have one.

I was just curious. :)

Tell him "Dad I've been thinking about starting a new hobbie, but I'm kinda torn between reptiles and drugs. Whitch one do you think I should do Dad?"

Assuming your Dad has a sence of humor. :D

Okay so I tired this one out on my mom just for a laugh and she told me that my new hobby should be drugs because I would likely get kicked out of college and be in jail and she wouldnt have to pay for school or feed me:main_laugh:. She of course was joking when she said it, which is good! Guess this one wouldnt work for me!

I would just wait for another gecko. Enjoy being 13 because I wish I was that age again where I dont have to care about money, major responsibilites, or anything like that. Now I'm a junior in college, paying all my bills, have a job, and live on my own so having a gecko is awesome because when I'm stressed from everything I can just go and hold her and everything is ok again...well when the girlfriend isn't here at least. haha.

I'm 13 and I can afford my 2 turtles, 2 leopard geckos, a pacman frog, and a dart frog. That includes all there food, plants, and substrate. Plus I bought them in the first place.

I get money for Christmas, birthdays, and doring work around the house(and other's houses).

My parents don't really mind what pet I get. I could get a tarantula, a snake, doesn't really matter. They know I'll take care of it, and if I find I can't, they trust that I'll do the right thing and find a better home for it.

Good for you...Who knows, maybe 10 years from now or less you'll be one of the best breeders here...

Well, it's going to be Chinese New Year in less than a week so I will have enough money to buy a gecko. Even though I have the money, I still don't get the permission to buy one. Guess I'll try some of the excuses. :D

JUst buy it an explain later... if they find it :) (I once had a gecko for about a month and a half before she noticed). Thats what I do and my moms a big animal lover so she won't just kick it out on the street. I pay for everything so its not a problem as long as it's not a snake.

I would have to agree. I'm in the same situation! (Junior in college, on my own, having a job as well and paying my way, except my boyfriend is currently going to college out of state and I never get to see him.) I come home and I'm all frazzled and tired but they make everything better. :main_yes:

You are very lucky to have an understanding and tolerant mother. No offense, but I personally think it's incredibly disrespectful to your parents to do things like that behind their back. Your parents house you, feed you, clothe you, love you, and take care of you. You should return that love with respect and honesty, not deceit and underhanded tactics.

If I had a kid who did what you are describing, I would make them get rid of the pet and punish them accordingly. It's not teaching you a very good lesson about life that it's ok to do stuff like that.

Haha you can tell the older people on the thread vs the younger people. Older ones are saying to do what your parents say and enjoy being young and the younger ones are like "I get money for yard work and allowance and plus I still have leftover money from christmas. I think its kinda amusing. Again my 2 cents is to hold off on another gecko and go spend that christmas money on a candy bar or video game or both!

One day you'll see why your parents do somethings that they do and understand that its the right thing for you. I definitely see those things now and I'm glad they didn't let me do some of the things I wanted to do.

I just want you "younger" people not to feel like I'm chastising you or trying to tell you how to live your life. I was probably the same way at your age, I know I took advantage of a lot of stuff.
