I have found that a mercury vapor bulb is best for any uvb needing animal. It provides warmth and uvb. I have one for my boxie and it is so much better than the separate bulbs. He is more active, eats better, and seems to smile all the time. They are pricey varying between 32 and 75 but they last for around 7 months. Just google it. You will need a 160 watt and a ceramic light holder.

I have found that the mercury vapor bulb is absolutely fabulous. Why would you think it would kill a turtle?

Also I never did find them at any pet store they are found on line. Try petdiscounters.com, lllreptile has them as well. You can google it and places will come up that have it.

You can pick up PowerSun bulbs at LLLReptile for under $40. (They can be twice that amount in pet stores)
They work great. I use them on my diurnal lizards and will be using them on the boxie we're getting next week. :)

Just make sure you're light fixture can handle the wattage.

The trex uv heat is great, and recommended, but I couldn't find one in any pet store in my town. I had to get the zoomend powersuns, which are like $20 more or so. I had to go ahead and purchase them.

Depending on whether the turtle needs more UVA or UVB, you'll want to consider different brands. The guys at russiantortoise.org has a great chart that tells you the difference between the different brands and their output levels.
