child can easily learn to take care of the pet

My 11 year old nephew has been helping with the geckos after school for almost a year... A few weeks in I gave him one with all the supplies and an enclosure... He's done so great with it and learned tons on the "job" that I recently set him up with a 3 shelf sweaterbox rack I wasn't using, 5 more geckos and a Helix... This kid even knows the morphs! :D I do have a strict no breeding policy though... He knows this and respects it... Plus he can't do much with 5.1! :main_laugh:

I think that kids need to get gecko from responsible breeders and not pet stores. Pet stores almost always tell you the completely wrong information. I got my first gecko when I was 11 and looking back now, I would have never sold a gecko to me then if I was a breeder. I did exactly what the pet store told me to do which was a major no no. My parents also left the care fully to me and never did any research on their own. Luckily the worst thing that happened is one gecko got traumatized for a few years after I was told they "needed" this climbing ledge that had a crack large enough for a baby gecko to crawl in a get stuck, and I had a tail drop. It sucks because I know looking back all that could have been avoided. It could have been avoided if I had been told by a good breeder how to take care of them. Kids can be great gecko keepers if they are just told from the beginning how to take care of them the right way.

I agree with you completely. Children have to suffer all kinds of let-downs as they are growing up, getting proper advice and help with their pets should not be one of them. Been there, done that! :main_rolleyes:

You could try the "adoption application". When I applied to adopt a great dane I had to fill out a 4-6 page form and submit a fee to be considered. I don't recall if the fee was applied to the adoption fee. The questions were very well thought out & would easily weed out people who truly weren't interested in the well-being of the pet. If you made it a requirement to submit a picture of their housing prior to pick up, then you'd know that the gecko was going to a good home.
