Repti-Sand

Yes I know you are not supposed to use sand or calci-sand. However after hours and hours of reading i have never seen anyone mention Repti-Sand. I am still pretty new to the leopard gecko crowd and was just curious about some feed back. Again, yes i know you are not supposed to use sand, but this stuff is extremely fine and does not contain any calcium to interest the geckos into eating it. I keep 3 dishes in my tank, one for mealworms, one for water, and one for calcium so they are not tempted to eat the substrate for calcium supplement.
Here is a link i found for it http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ...=4396&subref=AA&s_kwcid=repti sand|2914036461

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

this is not meant to be a sand debate, I stated clearly that I understand that you shouldnt use sand, the question was does the repti-sand fall under the sand category. Yes i know it has sand in the name. But with the extremely fine grain, lack of calcium additive, and the lack of the name being mentioned specifically just wanted some more info, thought thats what the forums were for. I have already assumed it isnt safe and am prepared to remove it, but wanted as much information as possible.

Yes, it falls under the sand category. I think that the risk of impaction is just as high, as it is with any loose substrate.

Sand is Sand, just like Water is Water. Even if you color it, its still sand at the end of the day.

I noticed that repti sand was in my female's poo, even though my husbandry was spot on and she got her dusted feeders in a different container. I promptly removed the sand and switched to paper towel.

I dont know the repti-sand very well - does it state on the bag what in contains ? As far as I can read it is all natural with no dyes or chemicals.

Well, I never saw anything about a "debate" either, TMF, so I guess we're in the same boat. Opinions and feedback, yes, but no debates. :main_no:

Eric and Lisa. Those were great responses. Thank you.

If people could just use the SEARCH TOOL or even scroll down a little and you will find more crap on sand then you could ever want lol. Reptisand crap is no different then any other sand. Just some new name they come up with to try to make money, who knows what it will be called next week lol.

Thank you to those who posted information and tried to help like Lisa and Eric. I appreciate the info. Ive removed the repti-sand from all my tanks and have put in Zila Reptile carpet. Doesnt look as good but obviously thats not the important thing. Main reason i originally chose to use the sand was because i have a custom built cage built out of wood with counter laminate for the floor, but i couldnt place the UTH underneath so i have it between 2 sheets of glass and sand was the easiest choice to cover the glass so they wouldnt be laying directly on top of the heaters. I have made this work though and feel alot better about the safety of my Leos. Thanks again for all your help.

i used repti-sand for the first couple months i had my babies. eventually she got sick & when i took ehr to the vet to check for sand impaction there WAS some sand in her tummy, but not enough to cause a problem.
juvie geckos tend to eat sand more than adults b/c theyre not as careful when hunting.. just a little fyi. after seeing that the repti-sand is not digestable (just like any other sand) i switched to carpet.
it's up to you, but if youre going to be housing a lot of geckos i suggest the carpet. easier to clean.
