Rest now, Nactra

On October 26, I brought Nactra to the vet. She wouldn't eat, rarely opened her eyes, was gaping her mouth, and acted listless. A week later, she was not improving. Today, she ended her struggle and passed on. I found her with her head in the water bowl, her eyes half open. She was with me for three short years. When I first got her, she was shipped to me already sick. She had a calcium deficiency. We treated that. She never ate much, and was never one to tolerate handling. Despite that, I still loved her, and she had made a place in my heart. Rest now Nactra, you're in safe hands now.

We've talked already, but I just wanted to say again how sorry I am for your loss. I know she was special, and it's always hard towards the end. When I lost Arson not too long ago, the vet's office gave me this card before I left. It made me cry, but it also made me feel a little better too.

"Remember me always, but do not grieve for me too long. I have tried always to comfort you in times of sorrow, and have made every effort to add joy to your life. I never wanted to cause you pain. Peace for me is certain now, and I suspect I will have eternal sleep in the earth I loved so well. Please, after your period of grieving for me, make room in your heart for another. You are the kind of human being that should always have a friend like me to love. Your kind and gentle heart should not be wasted on my memory for too long. Give your love to another. I know your new friend will never take my place, because we had something very special. It may not be quite the same, but a new devoted and loving companion will in time, become special in their own way. You loved me very much and I loved you. My spirit will always be with you, and no matter how deep my sleep, my grateful heart will always remember you. Love, your best friend."

Thanks Emma and Maia. Maia, thanks for your support, you helped me much more than you know. That quote that you put on here made me cry; it's always so true. I just finished burying her, near my window.

Maia, I'm sorry about Arson.

Thank you, Ken. I just thought of something...I won't ever be able to watch her eat again, or see her soaking up water as she laid down in her water bowl. It's just something that hit me hard now...

Oh, Mary. I know your heart is broken and I wish I could say something to ease your grief.
I am so, so sorry. :(

Thanks, K. I just finished disinfecting everything, and I know I won't forget her ever. She was my first "true" reptile I ever had, and I learned quite a bit from her.
