Right, to be clear, What are the signs of ovulating?

...because i'm still really not sure what i should be looking for. Do they get like a red patch on their tummy or do they get white eggs? I've looked around but there are so many different opinions =[
Also do they stop eating? But if they don't eat much during breeding season and don't eat much during winter, when do they eat much??
Hehe, i'm getting rather confused. =S
