Safest form of Substrate?

ah but you also must remember slate is a brittle rock and can become flaky and layers can "break" or come off easily because of the type of rock and the way it was formed.
so is it really the safest?

also what if the slate shifts and your geeks toes or leg gets caught under it?

I think safe AND convenient...paper towels is my chose.

I use a bare bottom once geckos are big enough for humid hides. Sure paper towels would make cleaning easier, but in my experience they get dirty underneath as well. So instead of using a towel to cover the bottom and another to clean 'leftovers' save a tree and go bare!

Ceramic tile fit to the tank. Even safer than slate and I can't even shift it myself... doubt my leo can.

I did see some flakes come off while i was setting up the tiles but nothing since then. I smoothed all the sharp edges with a file to prevent flaking or cuts. I'm not concerned that the tiles will shift as they weigh a tonne but there are some gaps that could catch a toe. I'm not sure if they're smart enough to back out of a stuck toe situation... no missing toes yet!

I do use paper towel for my tubs though!

i would say use sand that can easily get into their digestive track and clog organs.

on second thought paper towels is easier
