for awhile i had my 3 year old male with my 1.5 year old female in the same 20 gallon tank. i thought it would be fine because neither of them were 45 grams (i heard thats the breeding weight) but then i noticed a white spot in her belly:

and i looked up some symptoms for this:

* Swollen abdomen with obvious outlines of eggs - not sure
* Lack of appetite - no
* Alert - yeah
* Active - yeah
* Awkward movements - no
* Depression - not sure
* Lethargy - sometimes
* Unresponsive - sometimes
* May give up nesting behaviors - not trying to breed her
* Vomiting - no
* Muscle tremors and seizures - no
* Sunken eyes - no
* Decreased stool output - no

could she be eggbound? :main_huh:

Just because they're not 45 grams, you can't assume they won't attempt to breed because most likely at some point in time they will!

That being said, she's not necessarily eggbound. If you don't have a lay box in the enclosure, I'd suggest you put one in there. Maybe you'll get lucky and she'll pass the egg(s) normally. I suggest too that you seperate them now. Having the male in there will only cause her undue stress, and once she's gravid she most likely won't breed again until she's no longer carrying eggs. I would hope you've learned a valuable lesson. Fingers crossed that your girl pulls through.

From that photo she doesn't appear to be eggbound. If they did breed (which is very possible) she may either lay fertile or infertile eggs or reabsorb them as they start to form. Just keep her housed alone and make her a lay box.
